PROHIBITION REMOVED
ON OIL FTJEI/ FOR ENGINES. ' The Prime Minister informed a Dominion, reporter yesterday that at his request the Government of the Commonwealth had removed the prohibition upon the export of mineral and other fuel oils to Now Zealand from subject to the approval .of the Imperial Government. Quite a number of municipalities in New Zealand, said Mr. Massey, had set up plants for the developing of electricity with Diesel engines, and they were in a serious dilemma owing to being unable to obtain supplies' of oil for their engines.
SOCIETY OF FRIENDS AND THE WAR. J The following letter has been forwarded for insertion:—August 22, 1914. The Right Honourable \V. F. Massey.— Wo members of tho Society of Friends meeting in Wellington desire to express at tliis time of European conflict our eonse of the importance of quiet-and self-control.. Wo believe war to be contrary to the mind of Christ We would most earnestly hope that everything possible may be done to discountenance the attitudo of mind which seeks to exalt.our own country by depreciating or villifying other nations.' This fosters a hatred and disrespect which makes the breach between tho nations harder to bridge over after the war has ondod. We would urge upon all who love truth, to employ the methods of friendship, 'to do good, seek peace, and pursue it, 1 so that throughout the world the ancient vision may ho realised, of .swords turned into ploughshares, and 6pears into pr.uning-h.ooks. Signed on behalf of tho meeting, Elizabeth B. Rutter, Clerk."
