PLANTING CEREALS
MOVEMENT AT ISLAND BAY. A public meeting was held at Island Bay last evening to discuss the scheme recently' put forward by St. Hilda's Debating Society to plant vacant ■ s* tions with root or cereal crops, the produce to go towards the relief of distress. Close upon 30 residents of the suburb were present, Mr. H-. G. Hill being voted 'to the chair. : The general idea of the- scheme (as already reported) was explained to tho meeting. by the chairman, who mentioned that various merchants had promised to supply all tho seed potatoes required, whiles Messrs. C. and A. Odlin had promised ' fencing timber, Messrs. John Duthio'and Co. wire netting, and Messrs. Munt, Cottrcll and Co. tho use of horse and plough: Further, Mr. T. W.,Kirk, of the Apricultural Department, would supervise any spraying that was necessary. Sections of land for cultivation were offered by Messrs. Gardiner, E. A. Mackay, F. Harrison, W. T. Broderick, Tim Tcacey, P. Pearson, G. R. Andrews, T. W. Raploy, J. W. Copithorne, Jas. Johnson, \V. H. Church, J. E. Henrys, P. D. Healy, A. Laurenson, J. P. Firth, E. A. 'Liddle F. J. Pinny, nnd Mrs. E. Mead. Mr. John M'Menamin offered his own labour and financial assistance, and nouatioas were also promised by. Mr, E,
Hendrickson, £2; Mr. E. Boocock, £1; and Mr. A. S. Collins, £1. On the motion of Mr. C. J. Lockwood it was decided to sot up an executive to control the general working of the scheme, tho executive to consist of the following: Messrs. E. J. , Colley (hon.- secretary and convenor), J. M'lntosli (hon treasurer), A. S. Collins, A. E. Odlin, E. H. Barton, F. AV. Willoughby, J. M'Menamin, C. J. Loekwood, W. H. Potts, J. Wright, and W. J. Griffiths. Subsequently squads of six were elected to look after- different portions of tho planting. It was decided to ask Messrs. Pet terson Bros, to supervise the planting operations. A hearty vote of thanks was accorded the donors of money and kind, and also the owners .who had placed their sections at the disposal of the executive. . -. . .
Tho secretary (Mr. Charles M'lntyre) of the Now Zealand Natives' Association is making arrangements to hold an art union, the proceeds of which arc to be devoted to tho distress fund in the association's name. The prize is a'large New Zealand -ensign, which bears the autographs of the Earl and Countess of Liverpool, the Prime Minister, and members of the Cabinet, as well as those of, the principal officers leaving with the Expeditionary Force. Tickets, Is., will loe on sale to-day. By this rcoa-ns Mr. M'lntyre hopes to hand over a very fair donation.
