9. JOTTINGS FROM PROVINCIAL CENTRES. (From Our Special Correspondents.] masterton. The Masterton Amateur Theatrical Society produced the musical- comedy "A Country Girl" in the Town Hall on Tuesday evening, before a large and most appreciative audience. Tho principals wore frequently recalled, and the comedy was produced in a maimer which betokened .careful training. The executive committee of the Opaki Rifle Club, which embraces some of the best shots in the Dominion, have decided to form the club' into a Citizens'. Defence Rifle Corps. A canvass is immediately to be made for members, with the objeot of their undergoing military training for home defence The North Wairarapa Rifle Association has decided, in view of the present, crisis, to temporarily abandon -its forth- | coming rifle meeting. The association has decided to contribute £10 10s. to the War Relief Fund. A good deal of farm work is at present being carried out in tho Masterton district, and a number of fanners have expressed their intention of growing wheat. The Masterton branch .of tho W.C.T.U. has passed a resolution, "That provision bo made in the new Education Bill for the appointment of at least two women on the proposed Advisory Board of the National Council of Education." Tho local agent of the Labour Department, at the reguest of the head office, has made inquiries ooncerning the local prices for foodstuffs, compared with the prices ruling on August 4. Although the merchants have added 10 per cent, to all priceß, the retailers have not yet made a general advarice, excepting as regards flour. TAIHAPE. The Rev. A. F. Stent, of Manaia. who was appointed Anglican vicar at Taihape in place of the Rev. P. W. Clarkson, has taken up duties here. The fifth of the serios of euchre parties under the auspices qf the Taihape Bowling Club was held on Tuesday. The lady's prize was won by Mrs. Williams, and the men's prize by Mr. L. Powell. The net proceeds were devoted to the Patriotic Fiuid. - _ Mr. .Pargoter, Distriot Health Officer, has been having a strenuous time in connection with the outbreak of typhoid among the Maoris in the Raetihi district. Three deaths occurred, and eleven patients are being treated in the hospital. Mr. Pargoter experienced great difficulty m impressing upon the Maoris the need for isolating infeoted persons. In one instance an infected child was taken from the hospital by its parents, and no trace of tho child i>ould be found. The Maoris have a strong objection to separated from their relatives and friends. CARTERTON. At Carterton on Tuesday the marriage took place of Mr..id. J. Clifton, of Carterton, to Miss Ivy May Murphy, second daughter or Mr. and Mrs. S. Murphy, of i''eatherston. C. H.. ataudage was the officiating minisA complimentary sooial was tendered to the Carterton Brass Band at Clareville on Tuesday evening by Mr. and Mrs. W. B. Allen. Thure was a large attendance, and during the evening songs were rendered by several present. At a suitable interval in the proceedings Mr. iH.' Daysh, on behalf of tho band, presented Mr. and Mrs. Allen with a handsome silver entree.dish, in, recognition of the many services rendorei by them to tho band. Messrs. W. l-layderi (piano), E.' Hall (cornet), U. Woodloy (piano), W. Kay (cornet), and J.' Shutkowski (accordeon) provided the music For dancing, and Messrs. W. B. Allen and S. Rayner were M.C. s. The proceeds were donted to ■ the Expeditionary Force Fund. . Already, young lambs are to be een on several farms in this district. During Major Cowlcs absence from Carterton with tho Expeditionary Force, his position* as headmaster of the High School will be filled by Mr. D. 11, Yeats, of Lower Hutt. OTAKI. Mr. Gate, who has been on holiday £ has resumed duties at the local post office, , ~ , Mr. Gordon Freeman, of tho localpost otlico, has been transferred to Oamaru, and left on Tuesday for his destination. Prior to leaving he 1 was the recipient of a handsome presentation. Mr. J. G. Poynter, PostI master, in a neat speech, eulogised the good work done by Mr. Freeman. He also wished him every success, a sentiment that was endorsed by the others of the staff.
