JAPAN'S ULTIMATUM
INTERESTS OF POWERS TO BE RESPECTED
UNITED STATES SATISFIED
Washington, August 17. The Japanese Ambassador delivered to tho United States Secretary of State, Mr. Bryan, a written announcement that a Japanese ultimatum had been addressed to Germany, requesting the withdrawal of Germany from the field of activity in China. . ; Simultaneously, Japan communicated general assurances that the interests of the Powers , concerned in maintaining the territorial status quo in the Orient would be protected to the utmost, and that a conference would be developed; . ' . '. / Japan is not assured that her ultimatum has been delivered to Germany, owing to cable difficulties, and in order to guarantee its delivery a copy has been communicated to Berlin through'the United States Government. The United States. does not' intend to /be drawn into, the controversy, considering that .the; Japanese promise of the eventual restoration to China of the territory of Kiaochau is satisfactory. ■ ' ' ■'■ ... News of the ultimatum has been received at Washington as one of the gravest developments in the situation, bringing for the first time a great Oriental military Power into the range of conflict heretofore confined to Europe. (Rec. August 18, 10 p.m.) Washington, August 18. It is stated here that-Japan intends to capture all Germany's Pacific possessions, including Samoa, Gorman New Guinea, and the Bismarck Archipelago. The statement is unconfirmed.
