A French division opened the attack on Friday night, and after pushing the German outposts back suspended operations till dawn on Saturday. The ii fantry then advanced under a. powerful artillery fire, and soon drove the Germans from Blamont and Cirey. The Germans then occupied a hill overlooking tho villages from the northward, but the French advanced, and tho Bavarians withdrew towards Saart/urg, leaving many dead and wounded on'the hillsides. The Frdhch are in force four miles south of Saarburg, and have occupied Mount Doncm, one of tho chief summits of the Vosges,' just boyond the frontier. Further northward, in the Briey district, twenty miles south-west of Thionville, retreating Bavarians'pillaged the houses, maltreating tho civilians. Retreatins; Germans in 'Alsace also burned many houses and shot a number of the Inhabitants. • GERMAN GENERAL TAKEN PRISONER. Paris, August 16. The French continue to advance from the heights of the Vosges and the Germans are.retiring on Alsice.
