FRENCH TAKE THE OFFENSIVE GERMAN TROOPS WITHDRAW INTO ALSACE . i . Pjlris, August 16. An official notice states that the French tegan au offensive movement in. force on Friday night towards Saarburg, in Alsace-Lorraine, from Luneville. The movement was successful, and was continued on Saturday. A German flag was captured. - There has been an engagement on the Franco-German frontier, near the French Tillages of Blpmont and Cirey, south-east of Nancy. • where , the Bavarians had gathered their forces. The French occupied the village of' Balinont and the neighbouring heights at 'the bayonet's point. Many Bavarians were killed or wounded. ' , Five hundred Germans were captured at Blainont on Friday. DRIVEN FR.OM STRONGLY ENTRENCHED POSITION. • (Rec. August 17, 7.30 p.m.) Paris. August 17, morning. The First Bavarian Army Corps held a strongly entrenched position 'before Blamo'nt. A French division opened the attack on Friday night, and after pushing the German outposts back suspended operations till dawn on Saturday. The ii fantry then advanced under a. powerful artillery fire, and soon drove the Germans from Blamont and Cirey. The Germans then occupied a hill overlooking tho villages from the northward, but the French advanced, and tho Bavarians withdrew towards Saart/urg, leaving many dead and wounded on'the hillsides. The Frdhch are in force four miles south of Saarburg, and have occupied Mount Doncm, one of tho chief summits of the Vosges,' just boyond the frontier. Further northward, in the Briey district, twenty miles south-west of Thionville, retreating Bavarians'pillaged the houses, maltreating tho civilians. Retreatins; Germans in 'Alsace also burned many houses and shot a number of the Inhabitants. • GERMAN GENERAL TAKEN PRISONER. Paris, August 16. The French continue to advance from the heights of the Vosges and the Germans are.retiring on Alsice.
