Luisa Tetrazzini, in an interview given to tho London correspondent of the NewYork American, says that she is much annoyed because in Europe she is asked frequently to -sing for nothing at benefit and ohaiitv concerts. "How different it is fn America," declares Mme. Tetrazzini; "I don't believe in all the time I have spent there I ever have siing or been asked to sing at a.concert for nothing." Tho "Musioal Courier" has been instrumental in killing the "something- for nothing" ! idea in music in this country. Formerly important artists iriio visited here were afraid of being accused of ingratitude if they refused to give their services gratis' for charitable causes, and local artists of lesser calibre believed that tho surest Way to a quick hearing by, and tho-patronage of, the socially elect, -was to appear before them at any sacrifice in the entertainments arranged under their auspices. The fallacy, of expectig ever to pet money from persons for something which they, had-been- led to. regard, as valueless was dwelt upon by the "Courier," and tho idea now is exploded successfully. Mine. Tetrazzini sets a. good example by publishing her ideas in London for tho benefit of her fellow artists there. \ The English capital always has been a peculiarly fertile field for the social "grafters" who rob, professional musicians by virtually blackmailing them (under implied penalty" of social boycott) into giving their services, for nothing at "chanty" concerts, "benr, : Jk" recitals, and "At Homes." , Sir Johnson' the greatest "Hamlei" of the age, has appeared before the camera in Shakespeare s immortal tragedy. By !this; means we should, in this part of the -world, obtain glimpses of one of the finest perfomahces of a Shakespearean rolo that the world of to-day knows. ,
