Once is quite bad,enough for individual farewells at such times as the present, and to many women the repetition has simply intensified. the 1 pain of parting. It was a tremendous crowd that gathered in the Basin Reserve yesterday, at suoh short notice for the official farewell by His Excellency the Governor and the Prime Minister, and even as the members of the Force stood in square formation while they were being addressed by various speakors, the fringe of surrounding people by degrees insinuated itself among the • ranks at the outskirts of the khaki .square. To the strains of the band and the tattoo of the drums-that took up the ; rc-fi-aii. half-way down the lines, the men t>wimg away at the close of the speeches, and made their way through Kent Terrace, along Clyde Quay, through thick ranks ot people stirred from their everyday aspect of taking life, while every now and again friends,.fathers, or brothers would join in and march beside the marching men.
