Herries (Minister of Railwavs) was again questioned last even--ing regarding the position of railwaymeri volunteering for .service in the New Zealand Expeditionary Force.': In reply to: Mt. Poland, the Minister said that the positions of railwayraen who obtained permission from.the head office.to.vounteer would be kept open forthem against their return. 'Positions would, not be kept open for railwaymon who did not get this per-mission.-.Members wonid, agree, he said, that it was' impossiblo for! a big' concern like the Railway-Department to allow all their people to go away and.let the De,'partment know nothing, abbnt' it. (Hear, I'hcar.) If every signalman'went, for. instance, the" Department could not maintain the safety of tho public, and if all the engine-drivers went then the Department could not carry on its business, Mr. Poland said that the Department had invited volunteers. . Colonel Hiley's Statement. Mr. Herriels concurred, but.pointed out 'that the volunteers had to be approved by the Department. The Minister went on to read a statement-which had been furnished him by Col. Hiley (General Manager of Railways)-regarding railwaymen wiho wished to join the Expeditionary, Force. When- the crisis arose, Col. Hiley stated, railwaymen throughout tho Dominion evinced a keen desire to join the Expeditionary Force. The Department, having to 'carry on the business of the country, found it necessary'to avoid putting on too great a strain with regard to depletion, of officers'at any one place. Col. Hiley's letter went on to describe ,the organisation of.the New Zealand Railway Engineers. The Minister digressed for a moment to remark .thntno one who had seen the members of this corps on parade that dav could doubt that they formed one of ..the. finest .bodies of men that ever left New Zealand. (Hear, hear.) Succeeding portions of' Col. Hiley's statement mentioned the decision 1 to.fumish a contingent consisting solely of. railwaymen. and the fact that th© number at first decided upon was 200.. but that it was later increased to 250. Two-thirds of the men in the contingent, it was remarked, were drawn frpm the Second Division, and onethird from the-Firet Division'. The selection of the men had to.be carried ont hurriedly in face of trreat difficulties, but it was mado clear to them in the first instance that they wctp a«ked to volunteer fin- service "if selected." t ' • . . . That competition .for admission- to the -. contingent - was vwv keen was evidenced by the fact- that a noncominiscioned officer offered to. go ii necessary as a sapper,- and some' of the 'commissioned offiwrs accented nosiKoys tw corporal.^. ono the position ,of sereeait, rind another ioiW!. in the ranks.
