COLONEL HAYHURST KILLED,
MOTOR CAR COLLIDES WITH . MOTOR-CYCLE. .-■ (By--Telegraph.—Press Association.) . ' ' Titnaru, August 14. A shocking fatality occurred about 9.30 this -morning. Colonel Hayhurst and .-. Mr. R., R. Martin , ("Teinuka Leader') were motoring ' Into Timaru, ■ when on reaching Washdyke they tried to .dodge a, boy on the road. A motor-cyclist, Pat O'Connor, who was going out from lim- <. aru, was also dodging. The result was a, frightful collision between tho car and the 'motor-cycle. The, car was . turned and Colonel Hayhurst was thrown out-and killed instantly. Mr. Martin, who was under' the car, was severely injured. Mr, O'Connor was. ainpng , tllß wreckage in an unconscious .state. '. The late Colonel John Turnbull Mvr- ; ,: tay Hayhurst, who was well known throughout the: whole -Canterbury di* trict, was the only son of the late Mr. . John' Hayhurst, of Green Hayes, 16muka, aiid was bom at 6ea on November ie, 1860. In January, 1900,' he _left Wcllingtpn as captain of the No. 2 Company of the New Zealand Second Contingent, for service in South Africa in the Boer warr.and on June 13 returned ' invalided, and Bpent several .weeks recup- \ erating at the Rotorua baths.
