CRIES FOR HELP
MYSTERIOUS AFFAIR IN EVANS BAY Cries for help -were heard in fhe vicinity of the Union Company's Patent Slip at. about 10 o'clock last night. Some of the company's employees, who were working overtime, made investigations, and found au elderly man 'named Gibson struggling in the water between the Slip Wharf and the Union Company's repair yard. It appears that Gibson, who hails from Ohalcune, arrived in the vicinity of the Patent Slip by a taxi-cab at about 5 &,m. He was accompanied bv two or iree companions, and yhen the vehicle was about a quarter 1 df a mile on tho Oriental Bay side of the Union Company's repair shops tho taxi went over the bank into tho water. Nothing was seen,of his compinions. Gibson had been entangled in some, debris at the bottom of.the bay, and he was struggling in the water, which was up to his neck, when he was rescued. As the tide was rising, he would have been in a serious predicament bad someone not heard his cries and rendered assistance. Gibson told his rescuers that he had been robbed of all his money and valuables. Ho is now in the care of the Kilbirnie police, pending inquiries jnt<. his'adventures. . ; i v.
