ELDEST SONS & ONLY SONS,

WAIRARAPA'S 1?INE KESPONSE. ' The meeting. of farmers and citizens which took place at Mosterton on Satur-' day is described in terms of the highest praise by . Mr. A. Leigh Hunt, of Wellington. Speaking at the Central Chamber of Commerce last, evening, Mr. Hunt said that, considering that- the notice given of the meeting was short the attendance was. very large. Farmers offered "their eldest sons and their. only sons." . They realised that it was necessary to do more "than talk patriotism. Three hundred horses would: oomo out of the \Vairarapa alone, arid fodder, and other donations would be made. . (Applause.) "I believe the enormous donations are going to be made by the farmers," said Sir. Hunt', "I. think," he; continued, "the financial stress is going to be something the like of which we have never before seen, and i the time has come to curtail our expenses. It was everyone's duty to make a sacrifice; and ;he- who did not do so was not a true ■patriot." (Applause.) _ .( . (By Telegraph—Press Association.)' Masterton, August 10. Meetings of farmers have been held in every town in the AVairarapa to-day, and an active canvass has been made for horses. The response has been magnificent; money and horses approximating J67000 have boon subscribed. At an enthusiastic meeting of ladies this afternoon between £200 and £300 was subscribed in tho room to the equipment fund. A strong local committee has been set up-to provide for local distress arising from tho war. N
