"Tho Cult of the Passing Moment" (Metlhuon and Co., Ltd.) is.a book of "suggestions, towards a theory of the spiritual life" by the Bishop of Bloemfontein (Dr. Chandler). In describing .tho purpose of the book the_ author tells us that he begins by stating what he believes to be an essential characteristic of i/hb spiritual life, namely, "that it is a communion with God, or a waiting upon God, from one moment to another; with the. corollary that fresh and progressive indications of Hiß Will may thus be received."-Dr. Chandler has some interesting comments to make on the explanations of religious experience girwn by certain theories of modern psychology, and he-also has something to say about the relations between psychology and theology. He contends that psychology "has its peculiar subject matter in investigating the formation and composition of ideas, feelings, instincts, emotions, not in determining their truth, or falsity j it deals with origins, not ivitli validity." Various theories as to the .development of doctrine are considered with special reference to tho positions maintained by Newman and Tyrrell. Dr. Chandler goes on "to consider Christianity as "a personal intimacy with Christ," and then discusses the Greek and Oriental mysteries in their bearing on Christianity. arid the distinctive character of the Christian Sacraments. The concluding chapter of this'striking study of certain aspects of religion deals with the principles, or philosophy of t-h&' spiritual life. The whole subject is well thought out and ably handled, and the book will repay careful perusal.
