Major-Goneral Sir lan Hamilton commands Ithe Home Anny. ■• Field Marshal Lord Kitchener was born-on June 24, 1850,. and eitefed the Royal Engineers in 1871.".- He comriianded the Egyptian Cavalry 1881-4; the, Nile Expedition, 1884-5; was Governor of Suakim, 1886-88; Adjutant-General : of '-.the Egyptian Army 1888-92; and Sirdar,-1890.; He commended the Dongola : Expeditionary/Force in 1896, and was promoted to be Major-General; commanded the Khartum Expedition in 1898, and raised to the Peerage.- In 1899 he was apnointed •Chief of Staff of Forces',in South Africa, and. Commander-in-Chief -1900-02; and promoted Lieut.-Generol. After the war ho was sent-to India as Commander-in-Chief. l . He became a member of the Committee of- Imperial. He "entered the Army in 1873; served in the 'Algkan war 187880; served Boer war, 1881; -Nile Expedition, • 1884-85; Burmese Expedition 1880-7; Colonel, 1891;.Chitral Eelief Force, 1895; comma.nded 3rd Brigade'Tirah Campaign 1897-98; Commandants Hyth© to 1899; served in.- South Africa 1899-1901; Elands'gate, defence of Ladysmith (including Wagon Hill), Diamond* Hill, etc.; Military Secretary at Headquarters, 1901-3; Chief of Staff to Lord Kitchener, 1901-2; from that-time.to end of, war'commanded mobile column in-Western Transvaal, including actions at Hooival, etc. Q.M.G. to the Forces, IDO3-O4; served as military representative of India, with Japanese Field Army, in Manchura, 1905-06.; G.p.0.-in-Chief, Southern command, 1905-9; G.0.C.-in-Chief Mediterranean, and InspectorQeneral Oversea Forces, since 1910; visited New' Zealand during June'of this year and left 'Wellington for London on June 5. .-,'■;, j
