The Hon. Jj Allen mentioned in the . Financial Statement last evening that the latest report of tliePuWio Service Comnus, sibner, already. laid before Parliament, recorded inaDj- improvements and ported not only that the efficiency of the Service .had greatly improved, but that , economies had been effected or were in process of being introduced whnoh would result in an. estimated saving of.£fo,ooo per.annum. At the samo time salaries of officers, partioularly in the lower grade, had been. considerably improved. A mini- . mum wago for married men in the Service had been established. Cabinet had decided to permit officers of the Public Ser- • vice and Railway Service to occupy positions on local bodies, and this provision had already in some instances been token advantage of. , Councillor J. Godber stated at last night's meeting of the City Council that a surprise visit had-been paid to all the dairies in the City, and that tho result of the investigation, was in every way satisfactory. All the occupiers were .complying with the by-laws, and .the premises were in » very clean and sanitary condition.
