UNION COMPANY. AND SEPARATE : SERVICE. W
(By ' Telegraph—Press Association.) Auckland, August 1. A meeting -of the Uouiicil of the Chamber of Commerce received a letter from the Union Company, stating it believes the present service provides amply for all the trade from Auckland to tlie Islands, and cannot see sufficient inducement to run a separate service to Tonga, returning direct to Auckland.
, Mr. Henderson said he was sure the Tonga, Government would be prepared to extend concessions to any independent firm entering the trade.
Mr. Kent, president, said, • "despite the statement b.y tho Union'. Company, it was clear that tlie trade nad fallen off more than half. He strongly supported tho suggestion of Auckland merchants to charter a steamer.
■It was resolved to make representations to tho Government, with a view to obtaining assistance; also, to further communicate with the Union Company and keep in view the proposal to charter a steamer.
