HEAD-ON TRAM COLLISION.

' CAR OVERSHOOTS LOOP. j ( ■ A serious head-011 tram collision took place in Vivian Street at 10.20' p.m. on Saturday, but, although' both 'ears, wero greatly damaged, there was 110 loss of life. . Car No. 20, drive 1 by Motorman P. Beazer, was coming in from Newtown, and at the Taranaki Street intersection of Vivian Street, overshot the loop-ljne, which enables two cars going in opposite directions to cross. : Car 20 got'oll to the main line, and at'tho same tiina Car 96, outward bound' from the'city, driven by Motorrann O'Toolo, came down Vivian Street at a good speed, with the result that a collision occurred. Wm.'H. Sadd, railway porter, residing at 84 Cambridge To trace, who was a passenger. by Car No. 20, was shot through- a window, ■. and sevarely cut ab6nt the head and hands. He was taken to-Dr.. Mackin's, : where it was found to put several stitches in the wonnds in the head. Later ho was able to proceed to his home. In a statement to the police, he said that he felt the emergency brake applied, and tho next instant he was jolted through the window. On picking himself up ho found that the two cars had collided. No injuries were received by. tho other passengers' or .by the motorman.

Mr. M Cable, traffic superintendent, in a statement to a reporter last night, said that an inquiry into the collision would bo made to-day. No cause could yet be ascribed to it. Both cars' were single-deckers, and Car 96 was one of the latest combination cars to go on tho lines. Extensive damages wero sustained by both.
