LIBER'S NOTE-BOOK.

■All who 'have read those delightful books by Mr. E.-V. Lucas, ."Listener's Lure," "Over Bemerton's," "Mr. Ingle-' side," and "London Lavender," \and ■llaye appreciated the author's genial humour, kindly ■ satire, ■ and pleasant gossip, upon so phases.of English, and especially London, life,"'will welcome the announcement of their successor, Tho title is "Landmarks." In this book, the most ambitious which he has ".yet attempted, Mr. Lucas chronicles a> series of episodes, in- the.life of hishero, each one of which is ation of a significant and moulding, fact; Some of the discoveries ■ are spiritual, some material,, but all, are narrated with as much vivacity and directness as possible.; ■'.:'.- . . . :

Admirers of Arnold. Bennett's work, whilst still, I have no doubt, sharing "Liber's" keen disappointment .at tho non-appearance of tho final volume in the', trilogy,of Five Towns Life, which began with "Clayhanger," „ and was continued with "Hilda Lessways," will wclcomo the announcement' of Mr. Be'nnott's new Five Towns story, "The Price of Lovej" copies of which should soon 'bej on sale, in the Dominion. I notice,', too, that Methuen are publishing a new edition.of one of Mr. Bennett's earlier'stories, "Whom God Hath Joined," a book which has long been out of print. It deals with tho divorce problem. Mr. Bennett himself spent some time in a lawyer's office, an experience which as readers of "The Card," "The Regent," and that early story of his, "A Man from the North," may remember', ho has put to skilful and iimusing use in those stories. All.the . above books are published in Methucn's Colonial Library. The next batch of Messrs. Dent's "Wayfarer's Library"

is to include another ' early Bennett novel, "The City of Pleasure'."

Clever Mr. Anstoy, of "Punch," has collected a number .of his amusing Stories and articles from "Mr. Punch's', pages, and is issuing them in volume form. It is some time now since wo had a long story from Mr. Anstey's pen. When, I wonder, will the author p'f ''Vice Versa", and "A Giant's Robe" delight us again with a 'three-decker hovel?.
