BIBLE-IN-SCHOOLS
[Published by Arrangement.] Sir, —We feel sure that you will not deny oilr league (the National Schools Defence League) the right to give the lie direct to false and malicious statements (regarding the league) published "by arrangement" in your columns; Our league is represented this morning as putting the Bible "on an index prohibi;torius," and also as "singling out no other book in the whole world of literature for attack save the Bible." Now, sir, we have repeatedly affirmed (publicly and otherwise) that we would in no way oppose a purelv voluntary system of Bible in schools (supplementing the national secular system), provided that no teacher, pupil, or parent would be "under any compulsion" in the matter, so far as the State is concerned. Neither as a league nor as individuals have we made any "attack" on the Bjble. Many other, grossly misleading statements have appeared "by arrangement" in your columns recently, but as we are direoting the. notice of the Education Committee of the House of Representatives to them, we forbear commenting on them at present.—l am, etc., HUGH MACKENZIE. Hon. Secretary, N.Z. National Schools' Defence League. , July 29, 1914.
