SOCIAL AND PERSONAL. Star. Boating Club Dance. -The annual dance of the Wellington Star Boating Club was lieid in the Oriental Bay Kiosk last evening, and needless to say this ever-popular function was exceedingly well attended, in spito of the steady downpour of rain that consistenly fell during the earlier hours of. the evening. The decorations ot tn<? ballroom were most effectively earned out, the club colours, blue and white, predominating in the draperies that curtained the doorways, and 111 the ropes of tiny electric globes .that were swung overhead across the room. Festoons of Iycopodium, clumps of bamboos ana tree-Mrns, and gaily-coloured flaes alternated .with oars, arranged in symmetrical pattoms upon the sides of 'the room, and occupying , a place of honour on one _of tho latter was the-photo-graph of tho president of theclub, tho Hon. H. D. Bell, sent as a substitute tor himself, as he was detained by Parliamentary duties from attending the dance. Outriggers, suspended from tho ceijmg, , gave an additional nautical toucli to tho decorations. Supper was laid in the tearoom downstairs; spring flowers forming tho decorations of the tables. Children's Fancy Dress' Ball. The children's fancy dress ball in aid .of All Saints' Church building debt was a huge and superb affair, quite , filling the produce hall of the show ground. Messrs. H. English Hockey Players. The members of the English Indies' hockey team and the Wellington representative eleven were entertained by Mrs. T. 51. Wilford at her residence, Tinakori Road, yesterday afternoon. The gathering was convened by the hostess so as to give tlio > members of both teams an .opportunity of meeting one another. A very pleasant afternoon was spent by those present.- A number of the host-esses of tho English' team and ex-lady hockey players were also present at the gathering. . 5

A largely-attended "at home" was given by Mrs. Hiley at her residence in Hobsoil Street, yesterday afternoon. Very lovely spring flowers decorated the drawing-room and the various ,rooms in which tea and chocolate' were dispensed, the .roses being particularly admired. Mrs. Hiley wore a gown of pink crepe de chiho, with dark-toned embroideries, and a black hat, with osprey plumes. Among some of those M-ho were present were Mrs. ■, Collins Mrs. Miles, Mrs. C. The Rev. A. M. Johnson, jicar of St. Paul s Pro-Cathedral, writing to a friend in'.Wellington, states that he had a very fine voyage to London, though the steamer was delayed for two days m the Channel owing to .a fog. Mrs. Johnson suffered a good deal during the trip, > but Soon reoovered on reaching England, and at time.of writing was thoroughly enjoying herself in London.

An onjoyable evening was spent at CM. House, Island Bay, on Wednesday night, when a euchre party and dance m aid of -the funds of St. Francis' Church was hold. The winners oKtho first, prizes were Mrs. Johns and Mr. Cooper, and the.consolation prizes were won by Mrs. Green and Air. Dibley. bongs were (sung by Mrs. Evatt, inn., Miss C. Dibley, Mr. P. New, Zealanders will he interested to hear of the engagement of Lady Augusta Orr-Ewing, oldest daughter of Lord aiid Lady Glasgow, and widow of Mr. Charles Lindsay Orr-Ewing, who died in 1903, to Mr. T..W. H. Inskip, second son of the late Mr. James Inskip, of Clifton Park House, Bristol The marriage' Was to take place at the end of 'this month.
