PIGS FOR THIS MARKET

ADVICE TO FARMERS Speaking at the A. and P. Societies' Conference, 'Dr. C. J. Itenkes, of the Department of ■ Agriculture, , made ' a passing relerence .to tli'e question of pigs. "The'position regarding pigs;" he said, "is apt to-vary from year to year, the majority being -kept oil dairy ifirnis, and the number being dependent ;to a great extent upon the maj-liot value of calves, the dairy farmer using ins separated milk or whey to a greater . or lesser exent for feeding calves • or pigs according to which lie considers likely to be the most profitable.to l liini. During-'the pn'sfc-3'car, practically only a sufficiency of pjsjs for home consumption was available, jio more ; than, a lew hundred carcasses being exported. . • "Pigs could'well be kept in greater Jitimlior, and with good management should, pay well, as if 'the 'available supply for-our own requirements is exceeded, an overseas market is always available in Great Britain at a suitable season of' the year, from September to April, and in Vancouver last'year pork was quoted at prices varying from 7d. to Bd. per lb. Good management is at present usually wanting in the keeping of pigs, and though the conditions under which pigs are kept are improving, they are still in a very large number of cases far from being what they should. As a result, a full, measure of profit is not obtained.

"With tlie :one'exception of tuberculosis, qui' pigs are very healthy, no otlwr serious disease of aiiy kind being known among /them in ' the Dominion: The position' regarding tuberculosis in pigs shows a marked improvement and a steady reduction in tile number of affected animals' found, has taken place during the last three yfears. It is hoped that this.' gradual, redaction' of cases ■will continue, as it should do, and undoubtedly ■ would to-a very marked extent if all dairy ■ factory ■ by-products were properly pasteurised."
