PIONEERS WHO BLAZED THE TRACK
EARLY SETTLERS FETE
NEXT ANNIVERSARY DAY
A joi'jt deputation of delegates from the Jiarly Settlers' and Natives' Asso- ■ ciations waited on His, Worship tho Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luke), yesterday. to ask tor his sympathy and support in connection with tho very laudable move--1 went for honouring the pioneers' of Wellington—those who blazed the trackon the occasion ,of tho seventy-fifth anniversary of Wellington, which takes place on January 22 next. '■■■: ■ *i. J- Jenkinsaii, who spake for the two bodies which are beading flic movement, explained that the object of the deputation was (1) to ask thattlio joint associations thould be provided witli the rvewtown Park as a ground for a. carnival to be.held on January '22 23, and 24; (2) that tho Mayor sliould call a public meeting for August 12 oi earlier Concert Chamber, of tho Town Hall for the purpose of putting the proposals regarding tho carnival before the people. Tho Mayor would rc-. niein ekj r pprli aps that on tho occasion or tho fiftieth; anniversary, a very sue cessful carnival had been held, which had resulted .in a profit of. £450, tlia*, had not so far been used because n< definite suitable uso had been found foi it. It _ was proposed, this time to set out with th© specific object of "establishing 'a. permanent memorial, to tho lahours and victories of the pioneers of Wellington. The authors of the scheme desired to mako the carnival a great sentimental success first, and a finauciai on£ second. Ho hoped that an arrange* m > bo made whereby the.Citizens Carnival Association would work in .with tho two associations, so as to ea ?r ro " thoroughly successful carnival, xi Charles M'lntyre, secretary of the Natives' Association,' said that it was proposed to lay before the public meeting the plans of a building proposed to bo erected as a memorial to the eariy settlers, a carnival programme, to be' followed by a bazaar m the Town Hall.. He suggested that the public meeting • should bo on a date preceding the annual meeting of the Citizens' Carnival Association in order that their scheuie could be considered at that meeting. The Mayor said that he could only re- ' peat .what, lie had said ; on a ; previousoccasion, and . that was that the proposal had liis-hoartiest-syinpatliy, and ' would be supported by his personal efforts. He urged that the public meeting should be held after the "Carnival Association's.annual meeting,-which had been fixed at an early date (August 13)' tg suit the project. Ho was not in a position io pledgo tho Carnival Committee in any way as to whether 'it' would work in conjunction, with- the . associations in connection, with the \ jubilee diamond carnival, dropping its/ own for the present year, but his feeling was that they must avoid holding twe carnivals. It was necessary that thai point should bo considered at the annual meeting. As to the : use of the grounds ,at the park, January -22; had always been regarded as the Early Set- . tiers' day, and although the Citizens' v Carnival ■ Committee-, had considered holding a carnival then, they had not the slightest, wish .to "jockey" . the Early Settlers' Association'' out of that date, arid would not'do so. He pro- > mised that whatever . decision was arrived at at the annual, meeting ,of the . . Carnival Association, he would call a* public meeting immediately afterwards.
