VEXED QUESTION
p The following letter has been received in answer to "Suifrayctto's" letter championing tho cause of tho Suffragette in Great Britain:—-Dear Imogen, —I wish to emphatically protest against tho injustico of tho remarks made by your correspondent "Suffragette" concerning Now Zealand women. How many of us aro'there who arc "steeped iu indolence"? Very few indeed. The life of tho average woman here is otic of hard work, and a good many outside interests in connection with useful socio-' ties for tho good of others. The number of the idle class which lives only for plcasuro is extremely .small, and the majority of women hero, I venture •to _ say, aro keenly interested in tho question of other women's welfare, both at Homo and in other parts of tho Empire,: B u t I feel sure a very large majority of us feel that the militant Suffragettes, however well-intentioned, aro, really damaging the cause they have at heart. Most of us havp followed tho "women" question with great interest, sympathy, ..and heartache, without in tho least ignoring tho many sad and tragic disabilities the women in tho older countries aro suffering under. Some time ago one of the English papers (I think it was "T;P.'s Weekly") published in parallel lines the sentences given in England, by tho Magistrates for offences against property, .and against women and children, and 'if was: sWking : to see 1 , the differenco in tho sentences,-given for burglary,, or theft, compared with those for ill-treatment of' wives, or to those unspeakable creatures who attack' little children. lam only one among many,- both 'men and women, who.greatly regret the actions of the Suffragettes in meeting injustice with injustice,-and in damaging the reputation and cause-of women all over the world. ■' I would like to ask "Siiffra-. getto" whore, she was when sho sawNew Zealand '' women . "behaving like harridans of the French Revolutioii" ? I havo been "one among hundreds' of other women who were out in the town on election nights, and have been up and down, where thousands of interested spectators were congregated, and I have never seen any disturbance from cither men or women—certainly no quarrelling or even- sarcastic remarks being' exchanged. "Suffragette'sl^remarks aro entirely without foundation, and a serious injustice to the women of New Zealand.—l am, etc., NOVA ZEALANDIA. . Miss' B. E. ..Marling, Mrs. M.
