He inspected half-a-dozen hill forts on Vann Levu unci Vili Levu. They wore very similar- to tlic< pas'of tli'o Maoris. He also found quite a number of forts on Hat ground, which wore quite unlike' anything known to tho Maoris. I'licro was indisputable evidence that their concrete ditches were Idled with water, like moats. Sharpened stakes we're, stuck in the ground/ and other moans were used to strengthen these places as camps of refuge. Tho old Fijian was neither a laggard in fighting nor very merciful as a victor,
