DIAMOND JUBILEE
iEABLY SEITLEBS' CARNIVAL. A conference of delegates of 1 ' the , Early Settlers' Association and the New Zealand Natives'/ Association was held in the children's room of the" Central Public Library last oyening in connec- ' tion with the Diamond Jtfileo celebration that is proposed to be held on Anniversary Day next year. Mr. J. E. , Jenkinson, who occupied the chair, ex-i ' plained that he had.been given to understand that there-.wero some members of the Citizens',. Carnival Committee who were likely to object to a joint carnival next year on the grounds that the funds': were proposed to bo diverted to an object other than the beautifying of the city. The original idea of the Early Settlers' and Natives'. Associations 1 was that a big cat Diyal. should beheld in honour of | the early; settlers ion the. occasion of the Diamond Jubilee of 'Wellington, without reference to Jwhat. was to be done with the funds that might be realised. ....';" Mr. Charles M'lhtyre,.(secretary of the New Zealand Natives' Association) said that in raising the proposed memorial' to the early settlers they might' fairly claim to be beautifying the city.' The erection of a handsome building was just as much a beautifying action .: as the planting of a few pine trees._ Such, j an object should appeal to the.Citizens' Carnival Association in tho year of the ■ '.' ; Diamond Jubilee. They inreturn would ■ work for tho'Cafnival Committee in 1916. '':'■: The diairman suggested that they should endeavour to formulate some -j common basis of action, so 'that they could all work harmoniously together. Ho suggested tha,t perhaps they • could : come to an arrangement for the Carnival .Association to. take the.proceeds.. .','.' ;one day,- and the Natives' and Early ..-'.; Settlors' Associations on the.other.'. . Mr. M'lntvre said that the executive committee of the Citizens Carnival appeared to be divided as to what 6hall be done with tho money from the last ; , carnival, wliilst they on their part were putting forward a definite scheme well ( ■ ahead that would make an appeal to the public. Referring to tho promise of the, ' Mayor to call a public meeting to dis- , , cuss the proposal, he said that he had .' .•; received a telephone message that day from the Town Hall intimating that the joint associations could havo the use of the Town Hall,, which looked as if the Mayor himself was not going to call the meeting: Ho suggested that they should first of all ascertain exactly how they stood wtih regard to tho manner in which the public meeting was: to he called. ' ■ ■ '■•''. ' Mr. H.M'Kenzie said ho had the object of the joint very much ; at heart, and he was prepared to' go to the extent of'£so or'even; £100 to forward tho object of erecting some memorial in honour of the early, settlers. , The chairman said that at all oveuta jtlioy were' determined on two !that they were going to hold tho carnival, and that.they were to ask theCitr!zens' Carnival Association ;to .co-oper- • ate with them. '.'.' . : ' On the motion of Mr. Wra. Flyger it was resolved that a carnival bo held in; Newtown Park on January 22, 23, and , .24 next, and that those present; wait upon tho Mayor with a request for hun :to arrango that they should have the use of Newtown Park on tho dates mentioned, and that ho be asked to call a , ; public meeting as a means of interesting the citizens generally in the pro- : ;•; ject. ■■■ ; ■ "■'
