Lecture at the Girls' College, " On Saturday evening at the Wellington Girls' College an interested audience of Old Girls, present girls, and friends listened to a delightful lecture by Dr. Purdy oh "Elocution." The speaker was introduced by■ the Lady Principal, Miss M'Lean. Dr. Purdy gave an outline, of the history of elocution, followed by some clear, conciso rules which should prove very helpful to students of the art of speaking and reciting. He remarked that a knowledge of the anatomy, of the vocal organs was not necessary for correct voice-production, but that regular exercise of the voice was essential. The speaker made some sensible remarks' upon the abuse of gesture in reciting, showing to what absurdities gestures may lead if indulged'in indiscriminately.-; Dr. Purdy thpn proceeded to give illustrations of tho different treatment required by different pieces. His recital of Mark Antony's oration was very impressive, and, was enthusiastically received by his audience. His rendering of tho beautiful "Carcasconne," too, was greatly enjoyed. To many "The Highwayman" was entirely new, and its swift movement and pathos was much appreciated.
