WELLINGTON CLUB. - The Wellington Chess Club's annual handicap tourney for tho Petherick trophy and other prizes was got under weigh last week, tho first results being: —White and Dornbusch beat M'Carthy and Still, S. Gyles and Hill beat Dornbusch, and Bock beat Gyles, senr. The fixture liill y. White, stands adjourned in-an oven state. Seven of the competitors have not yet made a start ivith their fixtures, but- it is expected tliat more satisfactory progress will be made this week. WORKING MEN'S'CLUB. Last week's play in this club's annual handicap chess tourney resulted, as follows : —Rutherford lost to Gray and. Johnston, and won from Coulter; Alexander lost to Featonby and Perry; J. Reid lost to W. H.- Smith and C. Reid; Featonby won from Burgess and, Key won from Larking, . and lost to Mowtell. Feantonliy is now leading, with five wins and no losses, closely followed by Mowtell 4—l, C. Reid 3—l, Perry 3-1, Gray 4-2, J. Reid 7-4, Key 3 —3, and Burgess 3 —2. The results in the draughts tourney were : —Erickson (4) v. Milesi (0), Erickson (3) v. Wright (1), Burgess (4) v. Coulter (0); Burgess (4) v. Wright (0), Wallace (3J) v. Coulter (%), Wallace (2) v. J. Reid (2), Wallace (4) v. Roberts (0), Wright (4) v. Warren (0), Smith (4) v._ Coulter (0), and J. Reid.(3) v. C. Reid (1). Erickson, the club champion, has to date scored 30 points,. and had only 2 scored against him. The next best tallies are:—J. Reid 30—10, Burgess 18—6, Maiison 18J —91, Wallace 13J— and Wright 15$ —124. The handicap is ' by sealed points, which will, of course,' not bo .disclosed until the final round is disposed of. WELLINGTON SOUTH ; CLUB. The section-play in the Wellington Soutli Chess Club's annual handicap tourney was advanced a further stage on Friday evening, the fifth round resulting as follows: —Douglas (1) v. Bland (0), Wolton (1) v. Booth (0), Purclias (1) v. Perrott (0), Laughton (1) v. Armstrong (0), and Berry (1) v. Harper (0). Three games- had to .he postponed owing to 1 absence, but -two eames outstanding from earlier rounds were disposed of, viz.: Purclias. (1). v. Bland (0), and 'Loney (i) v. Weino (J). Bland appeared to be winning, but a miscalculation late in. the, evening: cost him a rook, and Purclias was thus able to keep his unbeaten record intact; The leading scores aro now as. follows: —Section A: Piirchas s—o, Allen 3—o, Perrott 3 —2, and Douglas 3—2. Sectiou B: Berry' 3—o, . Laughton: 3—o, Loney IJ—}, and Weine IJ—IJ. WAIRARAPA GAMES. .. A three-game match between two of the Wairarapa's Congress'representatives, viz., W. More (Carterton) and G. A. Jones'(Masterton) has just ended in favour of the former. A return, match will be commenced shortly. There is much satisfaction 'in Wairarapa chess circles, that tho weekly chess column in the "Wairarapa Daily News", is not to lapse after all; The late chess editor "Schnaparooki" (Mr. J. A. Connelly retired on the ■'.Tune'3o, and tho good' work done bj' him is now being carried ,oh by ."Greco" (Mr. ' Wilfred Moore, of Carterton).
