ON RICCARTON TRACK.' PREPARING FOR THE GRAND NATIONAL. (Bj Telsgmpij.—special Oornspondaoy Christchurch,'July 24, With the large number of visiting horses present it was confidently anticipated that She work at Kfccartort this morning would provide something more than usualy interesting, but- although some good gallops were registered the displays taken all round, were by no /neaiis fir't- class. Last' night the wea- . ther conditions wero promising, but early this morning heavy rain tell and eseveral showers fell during the latter part of the morning,' However,' most of'the gallops, were accomplished under ({('.-jd weather conditions. W. M'Grath was tho first trainer out and ho sent Tannhauser (T f O'Connor) and Thrax (J. Collier) a gallop over seven furlongs, a journey that was left behind in lmin. 32 2-ssec. The pair .finished together, but Tannha'user hud a good deal the better of the weights and bis gallop i,as a good one. (T. Musson) rattled over six furlongs in lmin. 22sec, while Marsa covered seven furlongs in the good time of lmin. 30, 2-ssec. . _ Kimbombi (A. D. Chapman) was going better than- Sam Pan at the end of a seven-furlong run in lmin. 35 2-6 sec. Both horses carried good weights and the gallon was by no means a bad one. ' • '■ Encore and Hops 'finisned together, after running five furlongs in lmin. 5 4-sseo, .wmle Silver Blaze, assisted by Skein Dim over, the last five furlongs, ran a'milo in lmin. 52sec. •• Golden-Horn rattled over five furlongs in lmin. Bsec.| -while Mumura was given a good working.gallop. Grey King was given half-pace'work ' and Slogan was going very easily at the end of a sis-furlong run in lmin. :2550C., Fabrikoff was indulged in half-pace • work, whilo Glenroy was not extended, . and Troon did easy work. Sea King went once round at halfpacs_ and sprinted three furlongs, and Carrie did a. couple of rounds at a good even pace. Overton and Chatmos did a good i working , gallop, while Royal Medal (Feilding), Kia Ora (R..Gray), and rßibstene Pippin (M'lntosh) were .sent a schooling task over the; big country. The two first-named gave a good display, but Ribstone Pippin found the pace far too 6olid and was quickly left in the rear. Rejection, Carolus, • IliarOs Hero, and Cheddar, working separated, were given useful work and Medallist had four furlongs at good three-quarter pace. '~• Silver Shield and the. Delaware gelding ran four furlongs in 53sec, and Golden Water went two .rounds: at a steady pace, While Captain Jack and The Spaniard, working separately,- were not fully extended. :.. .;., ■■ . ' ' . Glononglcy behaved in a very unruly manner while being given, slow work, and continually raced off the track. 'pvar (Shaw), .jumped five flights of hurdles in fair style,/bivt-Obligate (J. Anderson) did' not .please at all when going onco round over.' the 'big' country-:-' ''• "ga ' Unome (W. Buln) put up a nica gallop in getting to the end of six fur-, longs in lmin.23sec.-, and finished very we 11... The Obligado goldhig was carrying a fair impost,- and he appeared to have a good deal in. hand at-the finish. Briar Patch and Moddite rattled over half a. mile in SDsec., which is verv fair time, and Bransfield did easy work on 'the tan."' ' . .- Uncle Jim' did half-pace work. and Eaglestene defeated Irish Rose and another over six. furlongs in .lmin. 22 2-5 sec; ■,-.'..- ~. . ■■■ ~;...;-... ■~-.-,. ; Nithsdale and Forest'.'Belli reeled off six-furlongs in lmin. 19 2-oeec—a good gallop,\ and Daylight Bill, after doing around*at three-quarter tour furlongs in 55 3-ssee. • A lot. of interest was'taken in'the schooling .-task over the hurdles by'Kilmeny (O'Connell), Julian (F. Cress), and Mescal (H. Coker). The firstnamed was left about, tone • hundred yards, and the other pair went on in front, Julian on the outside. Coming to the last hurdle Kilmeny had made up a.good deal of his ground and completed the task in lmin. 56sec., while Julian took lmin. 59sec, Mescal being several lengths away. It must bo remembered, however, -that Julian covered_a lot more ground than-the other pair and _ was going the best. at the nmsh, although Kilmeny's performance was a good one. . i True Blue jumped nine fences in good style and was then pulled up, but was walking very lame.'• "> Merry Lass (A, Wormald), and Parable (F. Douglas) were companions in a round over the hurdles, the former giving a really gbod exhibition. .. 'Looker-on" writes,in the. "Evening News": ■ . ■ "Nobody was more surprised than fctevedore s trainer when he saw that the horse had not been paid up for in the, Winter Cup. It appears that it .was an.oversight. The horse'was paid ' up for, and also nominated for the two i other big handicaps. ■ • , "On the fiat, Tannhausor had a long I way the best of the seven-furlong gallop he and Thrax were given. If he goes on the way he is going at present, the solid little horso is sure -to be the elect of tho pair for the Whiter Cup, -.. though- Tnnnhauser is going the hotter j of the two now. It must be remembered that Thrax does not come to hand as : quickly as his stable, mate, and another fortnight will make a great difference to him. Kilrhen3*, whose rider did not seem too keen to let him have his head at the two' first fences, gave a good showing in a gallop over five hurdles with Julian and Mescah He was left fully 50 yards, and then landed over the last fence almost, on terms; with Julian, with Mescal beaten off. It was a good performance, as ho 'finished full of running, while Julian appeared to be doing his best. He is the best South- Island horso in. the National Hurdles, and the northern cracks will find him a hari one tobfyit. "Sunbeam'had a good working gallop, and pulled up sounder than he has been for «omo time. He has been freely nominated at the National Meeting, but his mission will, probably be ( the Jumpers' Flat Race,on the first 'day, and if he can be got to the post at all well, the National Hurdles on the second day. I cannot fancy his chance of annexing a. race, as he is a gelding that takes a fair amount and he has not had it lately. Of course ho has. had a lot of racing, and that may stand to him.. ' . "J. O'Connell will have the mount on , Exotic in the Grand National Steeplechase, and on Kilmeny in the Grand National Hurdle Race. "Prince Laddo was added to the list a few days- ago, and will not- uo a competitor at the Grand National Meeting. He is to receive a special preparation for the New Zealand Cup. "A. Oliver, who Won the Winter Cup in three successive seasons on Penates, North East, and Nyland, lias been engaged to ride Kimbombi in this year's race. Haskayne's, withdrawal from the Winter Cup, left W. Ryan, the Karamu horseman free, and his services have been secured for Multiply in that race. ■ -
