THE SUGAR TRADE

!..". ■;' SUPPLIES PROM JAVA. For many years New Zealand haa drawn its supplies of sugar.almost entirely from one company, but within the last fow days householders- have learned that Java sugar has been imported in fairly large quantities. Already the invasion has affected tho price of sugar. On July 1 the Colonial Sugar Refining Company lowered its prices 15s. a tou in order to meet the compotitioii, and oh July '6a further reduction of 10s. a ton was made,- making a total reduction of £1 ss. a ton within a few years. Inquiries made by a Christchurch reporter, yesterday went,to show that, the neW product is not being put upon the market at "cut" rates in ordor torecure a footing. One well-known grocer said that it,could be sold at 16s. per cwt. and return the/ seller a reasonable profit. The invasion of the New Zealand market is not to be left entirely to Java sugar. China and German sugar ia being quoted, and shipments are now coming forward. A consignment of sugar grown in the southern provinces of China should reach the Dominion within the next fortnight. It is'made from tho cane, and, it is said, is quits equal to if not better.than the colonial article. The German. sugar is inacle from the beet, and is weir known in the countries of Europe 'and also in Great Britain.
