RE BIBLE-IN-SCHOOLS REFERENDUM.
Sir,—l have read in your columns a' great many letters, but the whole thing is in a, nutshell. This is professedly a Christian country, founded on tlie sacred writings of the Old and Now Testa-, ments. If these writings are not reliablo, : then all our Christianity is a fraud. If' they are • true, they • stand the test of time, as they have done for nearly l 2ooo years. Every kind of jingoism is taught'in our schools, and no protest, but when tho people ask that the sacred word and' history should' be taught, a protest. The cry is,, trust the -- people, yet in this matter some people are afraid to trust them. "Let. truth and falsehood grapple." Please note:. In , the present Edu'eation Act, page 49, part 6, section 143, the following occurs-"But no child shall be compelled to bo present at the teaching of history whose parents or guardians object thereto;" I
Tho samo people who are ashamed of the: history of the past may well he afraid of the Scriptures, "for the entranco *of the Word giveth' light and life." Keep tho people ignorant; then you can play on their darkened mind, and superstition will nourish. Who is responsible for so little history in our schools, I would like to know.—l am, ; etc.,- ..;.-•■ '"■-••■ . JATEE BEE. Palmerston North. ' , ■ ■ '"
