Statements have appeared in a southern paper to the effect that the Union Company has had under consideration .'the establishment of a "ferry" service between Wellington and Sydney, .with 22-knot steamers. Several details Were given in which it is stated that powerful eteamers of from 12,000 to 15,000 tons register would be employed in the run. . On , inquiry being made at the local office of the company, it was learned that the report was without foundation. Further inquiries in other official circles drew an absolute denial The directors have always kept before them the importance of improving the company's steamer services, but. a 22-knot service to Sydney is regarded as outside the ■region.of possibility and has not been considered. It is understood, however, that a scheme has been under consideration 'by the directors of tho company by which the Maungamii, and other vesselsnow employed i» the Sidney-Cook Strait-Melbourne service, will, be taken '■ off that run and employed solely in the Wellington-Sydney servion. Smaller • eteameiys in the fleet will make the southern connection with Melbourne, via Hobart. . .
