THE OVERSEAS CLUB « DOMINION COUNCIL THE ANNUAL REVIEW The annual meeting and conference of the Dominion Council of the Overseas Club was held in the Town Hall yesterday. There- wero present: Mr. B, bardiner (Palmerston North) in the ? hn fr r, -V'M-'-'Myera, M.P. (Auckland), Dr. J. M. Warren (Marten). Captain W. doR. Barolay (Wellington and Mr. J. K. Macße (Dunedin), secretary. ■ His Worship the Mayor (Mr. J. P. Luko) presided at tho opening of the conference. ■ Apologies for absence from the conference were received from Messrs. J l<. M. Fraser, K. 0.. and C. Ford (Dunedm), J.. lt; Kirk (Gisboruo), G. A. R Mair (Huntorvillo), and It. Laidlaw (Auckland). ■•.'■. In welcoming the delegates the Mayor in a few words dwelt on the good results obtainable from'such an institution as the Overseas Club in bringing about a, spirit of good fellowship among the people of tho Empire, Great work was being done in tho Old Country at tho present .time to cement the Empire, and this must hiivo an effect on all of its parts. While- each part must have liberty of control, said the Mayor, there must be a central power to call all the units together into one solid mass to make a determined etand in the common interests of all. . ' ■ ■. "\ "Imperial Consolousness." Mr. Myers then moved a hearty vote of thanks to the Mayor for his courtesy to the delegates of the conference, Tho spirit of Imperial consciousness, said Mr. Myers; should bo encouraged, and ho was sure tho Overseas Club was doing this. This spirit, of liriperialjcon-' soiousness was •essential throughout the Empire. .... . .. / i Mr, Gardiner ■ seconded the vote of thanks moved to ;the Mayor. He re- , marked on the very small attendance of delegates, and expressed the hope that there would,be a revival of interest in the club, and this would stir it into greater activity. . , ■ the Annual Report. The annual report, which reviewed the work of the club since its formation, stated that the formation of the Dominion Council .in connection with the branches of the Overseas Club in the Dominion, was brought about at a meeting of representatives from branches, held in the Town Hall, Wellington, on January. 24,- 1913, when Mr. Evelyn Wrench, tho organiser, and Miss Wrench were visiting Mew Zealand in tho course of .their tour of the Empire. •■ The meoting was most enthusiastic- and much good work was done. Another meeting of the Dominion Counoil and delegates was held in Wellington on, August 29, when various suggestions as submitted by branches were considered. .The council regretted that many of the Dominion branches have shown very little interest in the work of' the club, thus hampering the work of the council. The headquarters , in London were offioially opened ;by the Lord Mayor of London, on May 25' last. ' Deep regret was expressed at the death of Dr. K. M'Adam, a momber of the council, who represented the Oamaru branch,.:. "Tho club has a great future before it," stated'the report,' in conclusion, "and it has already grown past 'the*'experimental stagehand piroy- ;• < eidithat,it. There'was 'never a greater need, fpr one great society such as this, formed with the definite object of keeping British subjects. in touch with one another. council wjshes to'impress strongly on every member to give the movement active support, and to assist the council and branches in the Dominion to do better work in tho future." .-" '-~ ':•■';■' The report was adopted The treasurer (Mr. R. Laidlaw) reported that the members of the various branches' were very dilatory,in sending 1 in their subscriptions. There was a small debit balance of 3s. 3d. on the balance-sheet. The treasurer's resigua- ; tion was accepted with regrot. Intimation was received from the private secretary of the Governor. (Mr. G. 1 M. Hainilton) that the loyal greetings 1 of the Now Zealand members of; Overseas Club wore duliy( conveyed to ' His Majesty the King on the occasion I of his birthday; and that His Majesty had been pleased to command, that an expression, of his thanks be conveyed to tho members of the club for their mes- " sago of congratulation, A. remit was received from the Oamaru branch as follows:—•"That it be a. recommendation to the conference that the Central Committee be asked to con- ■ sider the advisability of arranging for a ■ series of kinematograph pictures illusi trating the greatness of the Empire in ; its.component parts, such pictures to bo placed at the , disposal of, the various branches in rotation for education pur.- , . poses, especially, amongst the children, ■ and to bo shown on a special occasion. ' Tho motion is to bo forwarded to the i Central (London) Committee. , Another remit urged that the bran--1 ones .in the four centres should estab- • lish club rooms.— i This was adopted, to 1 be forwarded to the four branches as a ■ recommendation from the council. . ' It was also decided that the branches of the four centres be recommend- • ed to hold Oversea Club luncheons, on ' the lines of those given by the New . Zealand Club.' ... ' As the outcome of a remit from the ■Auckland branch it was decided to iifestruct the secretary to obtain a stock of club badges and literature as soon as , funds permitted. . It was decided that'the nest annual meeting be held' in Dunedin during ■ Juno of next year. • , The election of officers resulted as follows :—President, .Mr.. J. P. Luke; vice- . presidents, Mr. A. " ' . ♦ ■• • ; The members of tho Young Women's Christian Association are workiife enthusiastically for their "Girls' Market Days," the dates for which have been fixed for August 12 and 15. Mrs. W. F. Massey and Mrs. H. D. 801 l have oonsented to open tho sale' on these two afternoons.' To help the girls in providing some novelties for their market days, Mrs. W. E.
