Tlie parishioners of the Hastings Roman Catholic Church have presented the Presbytery with a motor-car to enable the priests to keep in touch with their widely-extended district. ■ •, ■ ■ Mr. E. S. Lutfrell,'of Hastings, left this morning on a trip to Christehurch. Mr. J.- B. Feilder was' to-night reelected to the vestry" of Napier Cathedral for the forty-ninth'successive time. ' CARTERTON. Mr. and llrs. \V. B. Allen, of Clareville, are tendering a complimentary "(social" to the ■ members-of the Carterton Brass Band on Tuesday, August 18. Mr. L. M. Isitt, M.P., is to deliver a political address at Carterton nest week: ■■■■".-.' Mr. R. Cooper has been appointed marshal stoward for the beef breed of cattle at the forthcoming show of the Wairarapa and East Coast P. and A. Society, in place of Mr. A. Clark, who will be absent in England. The Wairarapa ond lfiast Coast P. and' A. Society has depided to erect two massive iron gates at the.:entrance to the showgrounds, as a memorial to the late Mr. G.'W. Deller, who for many years was treasurer and luncheon-room steward of the society. A working bee put in Thursday in the 6uowgrounds removing the old poultry shed, the timber from which will be used in covering the cattle stalls. Tfie Wairarapa and East Coast P. and A. Society has decided to ask the Borough Council to ! emit the rates on the society's grounds, the same as last year.
TAIHAPE, Good progress is being made with the erection of a commodious hall. in connection with the social work of the local Presbyterian Church. The building trade is very brisk at present, and a number of residences are in course of erection.'. ■ The executive of the Taihape' Branch of' the Plunket Nurse ' Society visited Mangawelca on Wednesday, for the purposo of fonhing a. sub-branch of the society there. It was decided that the branch be formed, and Mrs. Wilson was olected president, and Mrs. Klingender secretary. Owing to a'subsidence of the ground, the Borough Council has found it necessary take up the sewerage pipes and relay "the portion of the pipe-line affected. ■'.'.•.'
An effort is being made to secure a continuous telephone service at Taihape, and voting papers are. being distributed among'subscribers with the'object of testing the feeling in regard to the proposal.
A joint meeting of representatives of. the' lUngitikei County Council land Upper Wa'ngaehu lload Board was held at .Taihape on Wednesday for the purpose of considering the question of metalling "the Mataroa Road. It was resolved to raise a joint loan for the purpose. '■■'.'■.
