Business :-TO FORM A MODERATE LEAGUE. PROPOSED OBJECTS: To bring together all those moderateminded Citizens who, loving their liberty too well to abuse' it, are prepared to organise for the purpose of carrying out the following objects:— 1. To safeguard the interests of tho general public affected in all matters relating to tho Licensing Laws and their administration, and the conduct of the Trade. 2. To resist the imposition of National . Prohibition -upon the Dominion on the following grounds, amongst' others:— (a) That temperance and not prohibition is tho true objective in a. civil lsed community,- and that moderation in regard to alcoholic consumption can bo -and is being brought about only by tho education of Public opinion, and would be retarded by attempted prohibition. (b) That in all matters of choice which are not directly unsocial,' interference by Government with individual will ia to bo deprecated as tending to tyranny and inimical to freedom, and therefore injurious to the characters of the units composing a progressive democracy. (o) That a number of secondary industries would bo destroyed, unemployment created, the revenue of the country seriously interfered with, the present taxation system disorganised, and the Dominion-render-ed, in tho prevailing view of other communities, unsociable and ridiculous. 3. To secure a TRUE PUBLIC OPINION at tho Polls by endeavouring to have recorded t.lie votes of that large , section, of Electors who, owing to want' .of organisation, have hitherto not ' exercised their franchise, leaving this struggle in the paft entirely to the two extremes—Prohibitionists and the Trade. 4. To insist upon the proper conduct of all houses licensed to sell alcoholic beverages by securing the amendment or more rigid enforcement of existing regulations, reserving the right, in the event of the failure of tlieso measures, to advocate . the introduction of tho systems of Municipal or State control. 5. To take steps to briDg about the systematic and Tegular inspection of all liquors and liconsed premises, and, if necessary, to urge amendments of tho law in this direction.
