The committeo appointed to adjudicate on the entries from the various parts of New Zealand and the rest of the world for the Government bonus of £12,000 for an improved flax-dress-ing device, has finished its inspections. Its verdict will be awaited with keen interest in the industry.
Tho Palmerston Borough Council, however slow it may bo said to progress with its exceptionally huge public projects, cannot bo charged with lethargy. It holds another special meeting next Tuesday to consider tramways, gasworks, and consolidation of loans question.
Tho Conciliation Council failed to secure an agreement of the parties in tho Flax Workers' dispute, which will therefore go to the Arbitration Court. Tho gold medals for life-saving, which tho citizens of Fox ton purchasod for Guy Edwards and Master Alfred Ebbett, for their plucky services at tho time when Mr. Teviotdale was drowned, wero presented at the last meeting of tho Ifoxton Borough Council. Edwards, who holds the Royal Humane Society's bronze medal, has saved one life, and Ebbett two.
Tho local residents are completing arrangements to billet the members of the English ladies' hockey team during their four days'visit next month. The Presbyterian Bible Classes of the Palmerston sub-district, extending to Shannon, Foxton, Marton, Woodville, Pahiatua, and Feilding, held an enjoyable rally at St. Andrew's on Wednesday evening. About 130 attended. After tea, Mr. Fraser Barton, tlie New Zealand orgr,niser, gave an address, and a membership campaign was inaugurated.

A proposal by Councillor Temple that a loan of £5000 be raised for street improvements was withdrawn after being discussed at a speoial meeting of the Borough Council on Wednesday evening.- . r • ~ At' the special meeting of the Borough Council oil Wednesday evening, the Mayor reported that tho engineer had been instructed to call for tenders for the removal of the present municipal buildings. , A lad named Max Dowling, son of Mr. H. Dowling, had the misfortune to fracture a bone in his left leg while playing at the District High School on Wednesday. He was admitted to the Hospital. • • The death occurred on Tuesday of Mr. George H. Dawson, a former- employee of the W.F.C.A., who had been ailing for a considerable time. WANGANUi. Though Dublin Street Bridge *is ■ now all but completed, being already used for foot traffic, it is evident that tho rapidly growing population of Wanganui East and tho probable large suburban traffic will not enablo tho country Djlo to get much ielief from the ge for stock purposes. Hence the recent agitation for still another, traffic bridge four or five l ; miles up the river for stock and general country purposes.: Matters in connection therewith havo now progressed so far that yesterday a conference was held between, representatives of the Wanganui Borough Council and the Wanganui and Waitotara County Councils. After the matter had been thoroughly discussed, a motion was carried affirming the necessity for a new bridge, and it -was also resolved to set up a committee representing the three councils to go into such matters as the type of bridge, cost, arid: site, and to interview the Government re financial assistance.
