An interesting arrival at Wellington yesterday morning, on ,hor maiden journey from London, was the new 0: and D. liner Star of England. . She was built by Mesra. Workman, Clark and Co., at Belfast, last year. The Star of England, which is similar in appearance to the Star of Victoria, and other later vessels of that line, which have visited New Zealand ports on various occasions, attracted considerable attention at the Wellington -waterfront yesterday. She can enow. a fast turn of speed, and accomplished tho journey, 1281 miles, from Sydney to Auckland, in a littlo over four days. Tho now vessel, which is 516 ft. in length, ' with a gross tonnage of 9150, has been built: under special survey for tho highest class in-Lloyd's Registry and to tho Board of Trade , requirements for a flrstrclass passenger and cargo 6teamer. Comfortable accommodation for • a number of saloon passengers is provided in large and wellfurnished Btaterooms. Tho dining-saloon is tastefully decorated and furnished in oak. These rooms are all weU lighted and ventilated.. The upper 'tween deck spaces ■have been so arranged that they can be readily prepared for the acommodation of about 200 third-class passengers in largo rooms, suitably furnished. Tho life-boat accommodation is in excess of the Board of Trade requirements, and tho boats being placed under Welin davits, can bo readily put out and lowered, even under adverse weather conditions. The, vessel is also provided with an installation of wireless tolegraphy and submarino signalling. The cargo space is divided into six holds, four of which aro insulated and prepared for carrying chilled and frozen meat cargoes: in addition to this there are insulated chambers for the carriago of perishable stores and dairy produce.. The vessel is propolled by two independent sets of triplo-expansion, engines, supplied with steam from three steel cylindrical boilers, working undor forced draught. Manuka-arrived in tho stream at 8.25 p.m; yesterday. The vessel left the New South Wales port at 11 p.m on Saturday, having been delayed by heavy rain. The C. and D. liner Star of India is duo at Auckland from London, via Australian ports, on July 27.
