N.Z. AMATEUR CHAMPIONSHIPS FIRST NIGHT'S RESULTS . (Br IW«naph,—Presj Aiiootatioa.) Wanganui, July 22. The first night of the New Zealand amateur boxing championships took place in the Opera House to-night, with tho following results :— Welter-weights. L. Wills (Taranaki) v., N. Bond (Wanganui).—Wills won on pointß. Hunter (Wellington) v. F. England (Hawke's Bay).—England was knocked out in the first'round. Kelland (Taumarunui) beat J. Sloan (Ohristchurch) on points after a slashing bout. Heavy-weights. Havill (Timaru) v. C. Savory (Auckland).—Havill was knocked out in tho first round. . Igguldon (Wairarapa)' beat W. Green (Manawatu) on points. Middle-weights. W. Dickson (Taumarunui) beat H. Morton (Hawke's Bay), after a slashing contest, on points. A. Wood (Southland) beat B, Finnie (Wellington) on points. Feather-weights. J. Newsome (Taumarunui) v. C. Ohisnall (Ohristchurch).—Newsome won on points, after an interesting bout. A. Goodman (Otago) v. Benson (Gisborne).—Goodman won on points, after a hard contest. * Bantam-weights. A. C. Venns, (Wanganui) v. Gilchrist (Auckland).—Venns gained a popular win' on points, after a good go. H. Guhn (Timaru) beat Andrews (Wellington) on afoul in the last round 1 . Light-weights. Bro'wn (Hawke's Bay) v.,Geo. Thomas (Wanganui).—Thomas won on points, the referee stopping the fight in-the last round. .. . . J. Stewart (Timaru) beat R. Leckie (Otago) on points. ANNUAL CONFERENCE. Wanganui, July. 22. The annual conference of the NewZealand Boxing Association was held today, when it was resolved:—"That the' Prime Minister' be asked to make tho regulations under' the Police Offences Act and the rules of boxing agree," it being considered that.a three minutes' bout in minor events is too protracted. "That the delegates to the Australian conference be' instructed to vote for the readjustment of weights." "That weights now covering professional contests bo ad'opted for all amateur competitions." "That the xonference, ask the counoil to set up a committee to collect'information and formulate a scheme for the : creation of a commission with- legal recognition to controlboxing, and submit a report to the various associations." "That travelling expenses be paid to judges and referees who are appointed to act at championship meetings." • "That tho Selection Committee to select teams to 'represent New Zealand at the Australasian championship meeting shall consist of the referee, one. of the judges acting at tho current 'New Zealand dhampionship meeting, together with-a representative-of.the council attending the meeting." ■ ';■• ■ -A remit regarding direct representation on the governing body of the association 'was turned down.- ■'■'... ■ •: It was further' resolved' to recommend the holding of the next championship, at Greymouth, and that..the •( annual, championships be held alternately ,ui.the : 'North and South Island. , : _. ■-: "That a rule be inserted in the Rule Book to the effect that in the case of professional contests it be unlawful to give any appearance money, viz.,-..win, lose, or draw; that no centre be allowed to hold 'more than'four professional, contests in each year—this not to apply to associations which have professional contests already in hand. Tho conference adjourned tho discussion on a' proposal that professional boxers be compelled to go into .the ring even should an opponent be half a pound over the weight stipulated in the agree-, ment.
