A SHORT LIST. ' At tho Magistrate's -Court yesterday a young man named Basil Gordon M'Elwain pleaded guilty, and was commit-, ted to the Supreme Court for sentence," to a charge of theft of 1050 sacks, valued at £32 16s. 3d., tho property of Murray, Roberts and Co. Mr. W. G. Riddell, S.M., was on the bench, and Chief Detective Broberg prosecuted. A Maori youth, aged 17 .years, named Bartlett Otene, was charged with the theft of £10, and goods to the value of £3 12s.,.the property of Marie Selby. Ho pleaded guilty to thd theft of i the goods, but denied having stolen ' the money. His Worship considered' that the. accused should be represented by counsel, and in-order that this course might be adopted'; Otene was remanded till Saturday next. ■. George Recs pleaded not guilty to a charge .of stealing an overcoat and a pairof gloves, valued in all at £5 10s., the property of Allan.Ward. He was remanded till July 29. On a charge of drunkenness he was fined 20s. • For insobriety, William Quinn was fined 40s!, James Cocker 10s., and Mary Jano Smylie ss. One first offender was fined ss.
