His Excellency the Governor and Lady Liverpool are to attend tho opening ing performance of "Forty Thieves" at the Grand Opera House to-night, "and on Friday they will be present at the annual meeting of the St. John Ambulance Association. : The Rev. Alexander Reese and Mrs. Reese, on furlough from mission work 111 Brazil, are visitors to Christchurch. They ; represent 'the North'. American' Presbyterian Church in the mission field. An old of the Dominion, in tho person of Mr. John Priest died at ' his residence, 126 Rintoul Street,' oil .Monday, at the ago of G9 years. The deceased gentloman arrived in New Zealand in October, 1878, in tlio sliip City.'of Auckland, which was wrecked at the Otaki beach.For: a number of years kv carried on farming. About 1894 he came to Wellington, where, until a few years ago, when ho retired, ho carried on tho busiuess of building contractor. _ Mr. Priest's first wifo predeceased him about 20 years ago. Jn 1901 lie married Miss E. Woodland, daughter of the late Mr. W. Woodland, of Dune'diu. Deceased is survived by a son'and a daughter of his first marriage; and his wifo and daughter. ■ The remains will be interred at Karori Cemetery this afternoon. ■ .' Mr. James Sloan, whose serious illness was, reported in yesterday's Dominion*, passed away at his residence, Raroa Road, Kelburn, yesterday morning at the advanced age of 80 years. Tho deceased,. who was an old and greatly respected resident of Wellington, was born in the villago of KirkpatrickDuihain, near Castle Douglas, in Kirkcudbrightshire, Scotland on .January 23, 1534. The gold rush took liim to Victoria in 1859, and after spending four years in Ballarat, when men from-all the world wero assembled there,, he camo 1 on to Now Zealand. He commenced business as a tailor in Invercargiil. then moved to Christchurch. In 1865 he moved across the island to Hokitika, and for ■ some time conducted a tailoring business there', in partnership with liis brother, Mr. Robert Sloan, now a, resident of .Wellington South. Three years later the brothers - came to Wellington, and for over, twenty years conducted, a tailoring business on the present site of the Union Bank' on Lambton Quay. The deceased had lived in retirement- since he gave up business in 1888. He was for many years a mem- N her and an elder of St. John's Church, and when ho went to'_ reside at Kelburn lie transferred his interest .to that eliurch. All who knew Mr. Sloan respected him as an upright, God-fearing, and kindly .gentleman; • He is survived ■ by two; Mesdames G.- A. Troup aiid J. S. Butler, both ot Wellington. The funeral takes place at 9. a.m. to-morrow.
