NEW ASSOCIATION FORMED
At a meeting held in the Y.M.C.A. last night, a new Referees' Association was formed to tako the place of tho old association which recently "struck.. , , , Mr. i!i. 0. Hales, chairman of the Wellington Rugby Union, presided. A number of members of the old Referees' Association attended, and Mr D. M-Kenzie asked if he could move a motion beforo tho meeting proceeded to the formation of the new association. The chairman ruled that he could not at that stage accepf'a motion from Mr. M'Kenzie, 'unless it pertained to tho one special purpose for which the meeting had been called—the purpose of forming a reforees' association. Mr. MuCenzie said that Mr. Hales was taking up tho attitude of a dictator, or a Tsar. Mr. M'Keuzie and rovers! who thought with him then withdrew from tho room.
The new -body is to be known as tho Wellington Referees' Association. Mr. Edgar Wylie (treasurer of the N.Z.R.TJ;) was elected chairman, and Mr. L. Simpson was elected vice-chairman. (Jlr. Simpson was vice-chairman of the old body.) .Ml , -. T. Jones was elected secretary and treasurer. Tho executive committee is: Messrs. W. J. Meredith, J. Moffitt and E. W. Smyrke. Mr. T. Jones will represent tho association on the Appointment Board. Before tho meeting concluded, tho ohairman thanked thoso present and all others who had come to the assistance of the Rugby Union and the game in the hour of need. Tho union, lie said, had called for assistance,' and the response had been greater than could have been expected, tor between seventy and ninety gentlemen had offered to> help. Mr. Hales said that special thanks were due to tho members,of tho, old association who had stood loyally by the union. The union owed duties to the players and to tho public, and throughout this trouble had endeavoured to perform those duties.
It was ■ decided that the association should affiliate with the New Zealand Referees' Association. The Auckland Referees' Association will be asked to nominate the body, and Canterbury to second the' proposal. The meeting passed a vote of thanke to tho members of the Wellington Rugby Union who had given tho new body its lead.

BOXING
- ROWDY SCENES AT SYDNEY STADIUM. By Telesroph-Prees Aesociation-Oopyrisiht Sydney, July 20. fliero havo been several rowdy scenes at the Stadium lately. A section "of the crowd objected to 'a decision on Saturday night, when there were seventeen thousand perspns- present. Those dissatisfied, not content with howling and shouting and hustling, commenced throwing bottles and other missiles and lighted paper in various parts of the building, at the same time shouting: "Burn the place down." The lights were turned out, hoses were brought into play,-and the audience made a hurried exit.
The rowdy element resumed the demonstrations outside, smashing windows, and throwing stones on tho.roof. Eventually the police dispersed them. The contestants in Saturday night's Stadium fight wore Fritz Holland, of America, and Les Darc.y, of Maitland. The American was awarded a points decision. .
CARPENTIER-SMITH CONTEST. COMMENTS AND EXPLANATIONS. London, July 19. Mr. Hallj the..timekeeper in the Car-pentier-Smith fight, states that Smith was down for 14 seconds in tho fourth round. He (the timekeeper) rang tho bell on the tenth second and sliouted to Mr. Eugene Corri (the referee) that, Smith was out, but Mr. Corri overruled him. Regarding tlie fourth round in the Oarpontior-Smith contest, to-morrow's •'Sporting Life" will explain that, owing to Smith's deafness, it had been previously arranged that Mr. ■ Corri should indicate to either man down the progress of tho count. Mr. Corri's opinion is that Smith could- have risen at five, but was awaiting the signal to rise at nine. Corri in tho sixth round hesitated before disqualifying Smith, because he did not. think the foul blow was vicious or dangerous, and was propared to say "Box on" had Carpenticr ■risen apparently none tho worse for tho blow or flick on the neck. But when Carpcntier was in apparent distress, Mr. Corri unhesitatingly disqualified Smith. Even if Cnrpentier had been "bluffing," tho decision was, argues the roforeo,. unassailable, for how could ho (Corri) know that Cavpontier was "Muffing"?
