LEADING TEAM'S HARD FIGHT

SOME GOOD FOOTBALL

Saturday's-weather was all that could )C desired for football, and the grouiids being m eplcndid condition, some good games were witnessed. As anticipated, i.M.C.A gave Hospital a good run, ana bwitts made Corinthians play hard to win. The surprise of the day was the defeat of the" favourites, Thistle, by Diamonds, and the latter team fully doserved their win. Following.aro the results at a glance: Diamonds 4 Thistle 1 Corinthians ... 2 Swifts 1 H °spltai 2 l Y.M.C.A. 1 Wanderers 3 Petono 0 Rover s 3 Brooklyn 0 SWIFTS AND CORINTHIANS. After a capital contest, during which the leaders for the 1914 championship wore- ham put to it on several occasions Urinthians just managed 'to ■ beat Swifts on Killiirnio Park. In justice, to the Black and Whites, it must be said that they had a day off as far as shooting was. concerned, but still the game was an interesting one to follow. Corinthians rushed in to the attack as soon as play opened., But they found the defence of the Swift's citadel solid. The Keds pushed their opponents back yard by yard, but they could, not find a loophole to shoot through. For several minutes the battle raged strenuously,'' and then a clever move by the attacking force let Gibson through the enemy's lines, nnd the result was a score. Both forces struggled hard for .supremacy during the whole of the second half. Swifts, fighting every inch of the way, kept their opponents strictly on the defensive for a considerable time, but once again superior generalship was shown ou Corinthian's side, and again Gibson was responsible for sending the shot home. The battle wont on strenuously. Mustering all their reserves and camp followers, Swifts made a great onslaught; They carried all in front of them, and before Corinthians could realise what had actually happened, the Reds were through the lines, and Richards had scored. Mr. M'Lean was referee. BROOKLYN AND ROVERS. Brooklyn and Rovers met on KilbimiePark, and the result was that the former team were beaten by 3 goals to nil; The first score was registered for Rovers by a Brooklyn back, who put the ball through his own goal. Each side fought hard to score, and had it not been for bad shooting Rovers would have increased their lead before halftime was called! Having the wind in their favour, Rovers did practically all the attacking in the.second spell, and before long Elford placed their second goal in the net. Subsequently Rovers did what they liked with their opponents, and the result was that Elford secured yet another goal for his side. Mr. "Webster was referee. ■ / HOSPITAL AND Y.M.C.A. The men of .the Y.M.C.A. journeyed to Porirua, and were there defeated by Hospital. Lacking neither in dash nor spectacular effect, the game was worthy of a city ground. Cross was missing .from the suburban team, and Skinner took his place in the full-back line. The forwards of the town team combined excellently in the first spell, and being j well fed by their backs, Hindmarsh soon scored. Y.M.C.A., 1; .Hospital, nil. The Porirua men retaliated with three corners, gained in quick succession. ■ Hughes and Daily worked well together, and th'o last-named made a good centre, which Hollis (Y.M.C.A.) failed to clear effectively. The result was that'. Foley, coming up swiftly, -scored. Y.M.C.A., 1; Hospital, 1. The second halt was as exciting as the first", but not till, the concluding stages of the game, did a goal eventuate. •■ Hospital had forced their way well into Y.M.C.A.'s grounds by dribi bling- rushes and quick passes. A scramble occurred in front of the goal, and over-eagerness did the rest—the ball went through, off a Y.M.C.A. man. Hospital, 2; Y.M.0.A., 1. Thus, the match ended. Mr. Hutcheson was the referee. DIAMONDS AND THISTLE. Thet opening spell was dismal in the Diamond and Thistle encounter. The wind was the main factor in this half. As a Sunday differs. from a Saturday, so did the' second half differ from the monds, nil. . Diamonds' left-wing, A. a goal from a corner. Thistle, 1; Diamond, nil. .Diamonds' left-wing, A. Lowe, and his brother, on the insideleft, then made the going. With a brilliant run down the field, he easily out-manoeuvred Miller, and centred. Liyersage goaled.- Diamonds, 1: Thistle, 1. A penalty followed, and Kestrell did not fail. 2—l. Edwards soon followed this up with a smart run down/field, whicli terminated in a score. 3—l. Livereage and Morrison worked, in double harness towards the close of the game, and Morrison, from the partnership, succeeded in obtaining the fourth goal. The final score was: Diamonds, 4; Thistle, 1. Mr. Hawkins, of H.M.S. Psyche, was the referee. ■ ' WANDERERS AND PETONE. Wanderers met Petone at Petono. The result was a win for the town team —their first this season. Howatt, a Potono player, received a severe blow in the face, which caused his retirement early in the game. The wind was a considerable aid to the Suburbanites in the first half, but they only succeeded in securing a. few corners. From a foul just outside tho penalty area, Holt (Wanderers) goaled. Wanderers, 1; Petone, nil. The second spell brought the wind behind Wandorers, and tne advantage was soon manifest. Hayward secured in mid-field, and with a low, rising shot, fcored.
