About sis thousand people witnessed the Northern Union match between England and Hawke's Bay, and a" very interesting game resulted in a win for the visitors by 30 points to 7. The first score of the match went ti the visitors, offside play leading "to a penalty, which, allowed Thomas to kick a goal. Shortly after Wagstaff was obstructed, and Gucrin had an unsuccessful kick at goal. Soon after England got going again, and forced the ball over Pressor lost possession, and a force-down resulted. From a scrum at the twenty-five the : visitors again starred a passing, rush; but D. Smith intercepted. Another opeiung was spoilt by a knock-on. Hawke's Bay were penalised on their goal-line, and Thomas failed with an easy shot. The home backs got away with a good passing rush, but defence was ( quickly turned into attack, by England. Tho ball passed from Wagstaff to Moorehouse. and finally went to Davis, who scored. Guerin converted. England 7, Hawke's Bay 0. Tho visitors' backs came'again quickly,; and' a pass from Q'Gara." enabled Davis to score. No goal resulted.. England 10, -Hawke's' Bay 0. Hawke's Bay put in some good passing work in midfield,' and for a time England were defending, but a long kick relieved the pressure. . The home team opened the attack, and after a lot of passing Ellison got oyer --on tho corner. Duval kicked a splendid goal. England 12, Hawke's Bay '5. Till half-time tho play continued very 'even. After some minutes of even play at the opening of the second half, Prosser, Wagstaff, Davis and O'Gara indulged in some neat passing. O'Gara passed back to Davis, who raced over. Guerin converted. _ England 17, Hawke's Bay 5. The visitors w-ept up the attack, and a score was saved by'G. Smith, who tackled Moorehouse on the corner flag. Wagstaff got the ball from Davis, and scored another try, which Guerin converted. England 22,. Hawke's Bay 5. Tho home backs attacked vigorously, and were awarded a free kick in a handy position, and D. Smith put the ball over. England 22, Hawke's Bay 7. Hawke's Bay continued to • press hard, and the backs put in some excellen work, but were unable to penetrate the visitors' defence. Moorehouse and Wagstaff got going again, and the latter scored. Guerin's kick failed. England 25, Hawke's Bay 7. Hawke's Bay lriado desperate efforts to score, and play became very lively.. Prosser was cautioned for rougn play. Duval evaded his opponents, and -had an unsuccessful pot. Tho last try came through Wagstaff, who got his backs going again and Jarman was enabled to touch down.' Guerin converted.
