SATURDAY HALF-HOLIDAY
, -T—T— « . UNIVERSAL OBSERVANCE DE BATE, . Mr. Wm. Lock (Mayor of .Nelsonl moved a remit in favour of a universal Saturday half-holiday at the' Municipal Conference yesterday. In speaking to the motion the introducer stated that the half-holiday in the middle of the week upset business to 'a considerable extent, and really meant two holidays in the week. For that reason he was very strongly of tlie opinion that the Saturday half-holiday should be observed by everyone. The motion was seconded by Mr. R. Fletcher (Wellington), who said he had always favoured the universal Saturday half-holiday as it was far tatter for business and certainly much better for the workers, who went back to work on Monday, feeling refreshed after a full wcek-eud holiday. Mr. \Y. A. Pearson (Timaru) said the Saturday half-holiday in South Canterbury would mean ruin to. many nc-opla as it. was the day on which all the country people camo in to town to make their purchases-for the week. Mr. T. B. Williams (Wanganui) nn- • posed a Saturday half-holiday. Ho said" that if the half-holiday were observed on that day tbero would not be much business being done diiring the morning, and there would bo an agitation for a full day—that was coming ho was sure. He had travelled round the world and had talked over this matter with many people, and he was certain that sooner or later the full day was taming." Now, if that was coming ho thought that the day should be Monday. The Hon. Mr. Barr (Sumner) said that no ruination at all had been caused by the Saturday afternoon, and tho statements that had been made by other speakers adducing that that had been, the case were entirely fallacious.
