Winston Churchill (First Lord of the Admiralty) snid- tliat' forty corn and meat-carrying merchantmen had been armed for defensive purposes, for which tho Admiralty was .not paying. Tho Admiralty proposed to arm merchantmen bringing tuc vital food supplies of the country, and this word of warning was necessary to prevent undue alarm. ! Mr. John Bums, (President of the Local Government Board) has appointed a committee to inqui.ro into the insanitary quarters on merchantmen, which are allegedly responsible for the high death-rato among sailors.
