The Hawko's Bay Branch of the Amalgamated Society of Carpenters and •Joiners have tiled demands for a new award, asking for, a 44 hours' week, and ,i minimum wage of Is. per hour for journeymen, etc. They asked that first-year apprentices receive 55., second year 10s., third year 155., fourth year ■ill, fifth year £'i ss. WANCANUI. The dispute over the Duriotown elec-' trie lift-way has been settled by the promoting syndicate accepting the Public Works Department's contention that it is a tramway within the meaning of the Act. The Borough Council (which has the right to acquire tho lift-way after a certain period) last, night resolved to apply on behalf of the syndicate for an Order-in-Council, and to tako such other steps as are necessary for the construction of tho liftivay in accordance with the provisions of the Tramway Act. During the month of June the building permits issued in the borough totalled in value £4511. A case of "interest to local bodies will be tested in the S.SI. Court here shortly, arising out of the recent suspension by the Borough Council of a taxi-driver's license. The driver has been advised by a legal firm that the council has now power to enforce tho suspension, and is now plying for hire without a license. Hence the proceedings mentioned. MASTERTON. Mr..W. S. Short, of the Public Works Department, has been appointed a commission to allocate tho cost of maintenance of the Masterton-C'astle-point road, between tho Mastertton and Castlopoint County Councils.. The following resolution was carried at a meeting of the Wairarapa Presbytery on Tuesday:—"That this Presbytery.of tho Wairarapa, on behalf of the congregations represented, unanimously thank the Ministry for their action in submitting a Referendum Bill upon the Biblo-in-schools question to the present Parliament, and trust that the discus-' sion may bo strictly limited to the right of -the electors of tho Dominion to express their mind on tho question of tho training of their own chddren in their own.schools. The Masterten Golf-Club defeated Carterton in ; a, match played on Saturday by seven, games to three. Drum-Major Pearson has resigned his position in the Wairarapa Pipe Band. He is to be succeeded by SergeantMajor Walter Sutherland. ''. The funeral of the late Mrs. C. E. Daniell took ■ place on Tuesday, afternoon, and was very largely attended. The trustees of the Methodist Church acted as pall-bearers. Of AKI. \ . It is expected that tenders will be called next week for the erection of a building at. the Otaki Hospital, to replace the one recently destroyed by fire. It-is more than probable that the structure will be in brick. The second" Moon Moth Assemblies was held in Bright's Theatro on Friday last, and was voted a great success by'the numerous visitors present.' 1 The committee (consisting- of Mesdames Booth, Harper, O. D Ath, Gillies, Bacchus, Misses Robieson and O'Rourke (secretary) looked after the enjoyment of the guests, who included Mesdames Thomson, Brown, Cobb, Podevin, Davies, M'Bain, M. Simcox, Rapley, \ Misses Skerman, Barber, Lynch, Cobb,'Quill, Pearless, Simcox, Hall, Curtis, Rankin, Brown, Millar, Maloney, Chamberlain, Fleming, Bennet," Ling, Clark, and others too numerous to mention. Mr. T. Reidy, who has been transferred to ■ the Greytown branch of the Bank of New Zealand, left on Monday, his place being taken by Mr. F. Jones, of tho Wellington office. Mr., Humphrey fl'Rourke has also joined tho staff. Mr.Mackay, who.-is on holiday, returns on Monday, Mr. J. Barnard, of Eltham, i. relieving officer, filling the vacancy till that date, after which he proceeds to Foxton to relievo there. -' The Rev. Father Do Lach, who has been a resident of Otaki for over twenty years, leaves.in November for tli9 Old Country, in connection with church matters. The Rev. Father has worked energetically for the welfare of the Maori race, haying at all times their interests at. heart. He is the author of the Maori booklet "To Wharekura," printed in the Native tongue, which the rev. gentleman understands thoroughly. Not only will bis absence be felt in this district, but in many parts of Now Zealand, ho being a leading light among Natives in all parts: On his return to New Zealand the Rev. Father will have no fixed place of abode, but will travel, and administer his religion in all parts. At a skating carnival held here on Tuesday nirjht. Miss F. M'Clelland won the lady's prize for the best ■ skater, whilo Weti, a Native lad, won tho men's prize. A hunt will bo held here on Monday, when huntsmen aro expected from Manawatu, Wellington, and elsewhere; A men's bogy competition will bo played by tho Otaki Club, on Saturday. On tho samo day the qualifying round . for the ladies' championship will bo played in conjunction with tho modal competition, which has been substituted for the four-ball match, fixed for that date. Owners of the first eight cards qualify for championship matches. The local club meet Heatherlea at Levin on July 25. ' A meeting of tho Otaki Hockey Sub-' Union'was held on Monday night to consider the To Horo protest in their recent match with Tainui. After discussion it was decided to get a. ruling on a certain point from tho N.Z. Association, after which a decision will bo given. "- _
