COUNTRY RACING CLUBS

ANNUAL CONFERENCE. A conference of New Zealand Country Racing Clubs was held in tho Town Hall last night-. Mr. Albert Bruce (Thames Jockey Club) presided, The chairman reported that since tlio last-conference the executivo had been in' communication "with the Prime Minister (the Hon. W. F. v Massey) in regard to the present method of taxing racing clubs on gross receipts.' Ho read' the '.'correspondence;', whie'h had passed, and iii which the executive had pointed : .out that, while it was agreed that- tho. ; tax on totalisator - receipts should remain as at present, it was desired that, in regard'to other revenue, the clubs should bo' taxed. on -profits only. The Prime Minister had replied that the Minister of Internal Affaire had been in communication with tho N.Z. Racing Conference on the -same, question, and it was hoped that'as a result-of wliat was being done, tlio Racing Conference would take the matter into consideration. The Piimo Minister had also stated tliat he had submitted the matter to the Minister of Finance, for consideration when tho' Estimates for 'tlio current year woro under review, Ballot papers.in connection with tho proposal ' to form , a Country . Racing Clubs' Association were opened aii'd' counted, and it was announced that by 28 votes to 2 tho clubs favoured 'the; formation of an association. i Mr. B. R. Gardener (Horowhonua) moved: "That an association be formed,! to bo called the Country Racing Clubs' Associtaion." Speaking to the.motion, ho ventured'tlie opinion that if suc'h anassociation had' boon in existence when' the-Racing Commission came along, the country racing clubs would hot have been; in tlio unfortunate ; position they, were in to-day. It was time that tliey.' showed that, they were a pewer to bo reckoned with,. •."
