SERIOUS TROUBLE IN NEW HEBRIDES
FRENCH AND BRITISH SAILORS WOUNDED. (Fjr Tclesraph.—Press Association.! Auckland, July 14. : News has been brought by the mission steamer Southern Cross of a punitivo expedition to Malekula hv the French frigate Kersaint and the British gunboat Torch. While tho Southern Cross was at Vila, the seat of tho Administration in the New Hebrides, on July 5, tho Kersaint arrived with fivo wounded men and the body of a French sailor. Tho wounded comprised two IJrencli policemen, seriously wounded, of whom one died soon, after arrival, a British policeman, whoso arm had to bo amputated, and a French and a British sailor. The wounded were taken to tho Frpncli Hospital, but inquiries regarding tho expediences of tho expedition were not answered. Early tho next day a -s»iiish warship passed Vila, at full speed, and it was presumed that help had been summoned by H.M.S. Torch. When tho mission steamer left thatjevening tho Ivcrsaintjiad not sailed.
