ASSAILANT ESCAPES.
: ■ A sensational arid serious assault was coriimitted on a Chinaman named Kwong On in his shop in.Wallace, Street early last evening: He was. struck.-' on 'the head by an ''-assailant arnied "with ; a blunt instrument, sufforing injuries' necessitating his removal to the Hospital in a. very serious condition. The j'as'i sault occurred in Kwong On's shop at the corner of Rolleston and Wallace Streets. , On the opposite corner is a bi-ielc kiln, and across tho road in front of-the sliop, for a distance of about two hundred yards, there extends a forest of; heavy trees.., Some distance away from tho shop is an- arc light, and other than this ithe: locality last night'was fairly diirk. , ,'•. ■ • ■-'■.■ :■' ' ~','

They soaichcd the .vicinity thoroughly and behind a fonoo Detective Cassells found a formidable and nasty-lonkiiift bludgeon in tho sTinpe of a length of lead piping. It was wrapped up in a piece of brown paper, and tied with a pioco of string, and was found behind a fence a few yards away fiom tlio shop It is presumed that this instrument uns used in tho assault.
