In accordance with the usual custom members of the Press then withdrew to a room adjoining the Council Chamber About twenty minutes latci , councillors commenced to file- out of the Chamber, and it was learned that the meeting was at an end —that a diffeiencehad occurred 1/etwecn Counullor A H Hmdmarsh, who aruved some time after the start of tho meeting, and the Mayor (Mr J. P Luke) By tho tiroo this was definitely known, Councilloi Hmdmareh had' left the room and could not bo approaohed on the mat'ter and the other members of the council seemed unwilling to divulge what had taken placo on account of tho fact that the business* was in committee It was gathered) however, that during a discussion on bases, Councillor Hmdmarsh had made a remark, which the Ma\or regarded as a reflection on the chair, and which he had called on Councillor Hindmsush io withdraw As the latter refusod ibsolutely to withdraw , tho Mayor remained in the chair but declined to go'on with tho bus neßs »

As it was clear that a'deadlock had been reached councillors commenced to leave the Chamber nnd tho council wag quickly without a quorum. * The Mayor, on being asked to state what had actually occurred, declined to say what uas the exact nature of'the remark mado by Councillor Hindmarsh, but eaid that it was something which ho insisted should.bo withdrawn. As the withdrawal wns not forthcoming he remained'in the tfiair, but would not proceed with the business. Hβ, had no desire to resort to "any theatrical measures" such as calling on "the ser-R(»ant-at-arms."
