THE REFEREES' STRIKE
*^— —— '', EMERGENCIES TO THE RESCUE. In response to the appealof the WelJington Rugby Union for "all old players, supporters of tho gamo; and members or the present Referees' Association, who aie willing to act as referees," no fewer than sixty-eight applications have been received. This number, is double tho number required for Saturday's games, so that'the Union has perforce to hold over some of tho willing ones till tho following .week.' Whether tho applicants are' "out for fun," are really liiteiested in the game, or are actuated by the desire to keep the flag flying, is hard to say. Anyhow tho number of applicants includes some of the members of the Referees'. Association. Intimation was received from the Referees' Association at last night's meeting of the Rugby Union to the effect that the referees would refuse to ■ act in any matches in future. The chairman said that the Union had anticipated tho letter, and certain action was decided upon at a special meeting last Friday. This concerned tho insertion of an advertisement in the papers calling for people to act as referees. After due 'deliberation referees were selected for Saturday's games as follow: Senior.
