TINNED SUNSHINE.

THE LIGHT THAT NEVER FAILED.

SOME REMAKES ON RADIUM:

When Madam Curio first announced to the world lier discovery of Radium, Science had to reconstruct its theories of light and matter. For indeed hero -was a new and wondrous principle—tho Tery life light of the Sun itself and ono whoso uses could bo harnessed to the greatest benofits of mankind. What its constitution is wo do not know even yet, but its effects are the talk of the civilised world to-day. We know that the minutest atom of Radium without losing any of its own energy will thront off light emanations for all measurable time and so eearchingly brilliant that it vies with tho very Sunlight in their power. How pertinent then is the name as applied to Commercial polishes, and this is why;" Radium" was selected as a name for the Boot Polishes and other similar preparations, now so well known throughout the Dom : niou. It is quite a short time ago that Mr. M'Leod, senr., of Martinborough, seeing the real need for an effective boot polish; and ono locally manufactured in the Dominion, secured a formula for its preparation from the Old Country. This he so improved, on in manufacture as to make it practically perfect, and its local fame became' so great that the present Managing Director, Mr. Mathew A.' M'Leod, established a Radium Polish factory .and a distributing depot in Welling-, ton to enable him to cope with the rapidly increasing volume of trade. Thiß was only a little over , two years ago, and' since its inception the Sales of Kadium Polishes have leaped up month by month and'year by year till now the product is found in every part of tho Dominion, from Stewart Island to North Cape.

■ The basic'merit of Badiuiu Boot Polish consists in its-value as.a'leather ■preservative—but not only is it pre-eminently this—but as well it .water-proofs the leather and gives it by simple rubbing a shine .that is dazzlingly bright. Nor is this brightness a thing of the hour only; it lasts so long that a. weekly application of the polish is often all that is required, a daily, rub over restoring the lustre of the leather to,'its dazzling brilliance, By this it is seon how weH Radium Polishes justify their, name. . But there is e further feature in the make-up o; .Radium Polishes that deserves them general support. The tins in which: they are sold have a- dent at the side to facilitate their being opened. This feature is a most important one, for who lias not_ experienced the difficulty of opening a tin of ordinary polish. Under this .Radium Dent patent, the tin, however tightly it be iamriied, can bo opened instantly by holding the two thumbs over the Dent and pushing the oiie against the other. No other Polish is tinned in this modern way. As regards tan boot creams—for-the' Eadiuni noople manufacture both creams arid polishes—many peoplo have wondered why their footwear became darker after polishing a few times. This.is due toditrk cream being used on light boots.HntUum Creams are manufactured in both-Light and Dark shadw of Tun, so that ; one .need only be earefuhto chooje the right tint to overconiic. this difficulty." A visit to the Kadiunr Factory at Bnrhanipore'is illuminating. One seeing the cases, boxes, and trayn filled with thousands unon thousands of tills of polish, is inclined to ask: "Is so much boot polish used, iii the world?" Yet there are the hands going hammer and tongs turning out myriads of the bright little 'tins', the contents of which are destined to play so important a part in. that attribute said to be next to godliness. In the store room 'we see piled-np cases and sacks of ingredients from every part of the worldChina; Brazil, Austria, and England have all been drawn- upon for their supply. Next is the Veiling room, where a number of great buckets arp trently boiled'bv a surrounding steam jacket, into which the buckets fit exactly. Each of these contain different, ingredients, and after boiling th.s requisite, time the contents are emptied into IfiS-trallon mixers, aiid there churned till all the component parts are intimately mixed. That is not the end. Trom the mixer the fluid polish is conveyed to a large double-sided cistern, where by an inflow of cold water or steam tli'e mixture is cooled or heated as the case may be before it is run off. The next operation is filling the ti"s. This, is done by a.."J!oborts", patent filling machine (of which them are six in use). This is a double-sided round steel receptacle, taper-, ing to n doublo outlet at the bottom, where there is a tan to govern the. (low. This-machine travels over the table 011 a ste°l shaft, and its mouth may be directed to wherever the. tins Are ready to receive the mixture. When cool the surface of the mixture is covered by discs of silver paper,-the lid is firmly placed on. the tins are. packed in light cardboard boxes, the boxes stacked'in cases, and then off they go to the nearest and uttercost parts of the Dominion for sale in the form which your bootmaker offers them to you.

Recently the increase in-the. demand for Radium Polishes lias necessitated a' great nufnber of improved appliances beinjr operated nt the factory. At the present time no work is done'bv hand that can he more conveniently done by modern machinery, and v;liilo the output in 1909 was onlv 69,7fiS tins, in 1912 this had bf">n more than trebled, .and last year tlio full million mark was attained. ( Not only do the Radium Company put out boot' polishes and creams, bilt as well they, manufacture Radium Floor Polish and 'Radium Brass Polish. v;hilst a'new apoliancc of theirs, the Ttadiuni, Spray.: bids .fair to oust all other disinfectant devices on the market by sheer dint of .merit. Being made in tho Dominion, the Radium, Manufactures deserve supnort, from ever?- patriotic New Zealahder. Th'fy' have an added advantage over oversea oroduclions of their kind by the fact of their being freshly packed and not having to be shipped through varying degrees of climate. So rapidly are the sales .of Radium increasing i that the tin you buy has probably been manufactured'only a short while "'since in 'Wellington. All Boot and Slice Stores eejl Hadinni Polishes and Creams—the : price is- trifling, ftrid the quality of a uniformly high standard. ;. ....
